What about the players that use dead period as an opportunity to attend college camps, combines as well as college visits to University's they may want to attend. Most colleges that I have seen send their players home for the month of May and start either voluntary or mandatory workouts the first week in June. I would be all for KHSAA giving high school athletes the month of June off, only for it to allow them the opportunity to expand their recruiting profile and visit different colleges that they may want to attend. Giving athletes a chance to look beyond high school is a much needed opportunity, so that if they do get the chance to play at the next level they have already been accepted and not waiting after they sign to get financial aid.

Also, I think if we are just going to take the district champs then there just needs to be one playoff bracket not six.

You cant take the whole monthy of June off for the following reason.

Some schools are still in session and wouldnt that be a violation if some schools had in school weights, track, baseball, softball, tennis?

Yes, some sports go into almost mid June. I'm ok with most of June being open for activities. Have the dead period from the last week of June through week 3 of July. That's one free month for vacations, relaxation, rest, for student athletes. Heck many states don't start fall sports until August 1.

My suggestion is to make it longer. July 1st through July 31st.

Start Practice August 1st and first game start September 1st.

Definitely should be expanded, bookend an extra week to make it a month. It’s important for the athlete, and his family, for that time. This may be blasphemy to some, but there is more to life than high school sports. More time with a coach does not equate higher performance.

I've always been in favor of expanding the DP. Three weeks would be my preference.

Oh, crud. Hit "end"; but, intended "expand". Sorry, but think at least another week gives families tons more options.

Um, it was ALWAYS optional before the dead period rule went into effect.

The problem was, schools didn't even give kids an option, so the state (with a backing from the MAJORITY of those surveyed) stepped in and took charge.

Other states followed Kentucky's lead, in fact. If you check the post from the bylaw pdf, you will see people originally wanted a four-week dead period.

June 18 to July 16 would be a good time to be off.

Let kids be kids and if they don’t know how then they need time to figure it out during this time.
Kids are not being punished with time off. They can do push-ups and sit ups like a guy named Herschel Walker, worked out good for him.

College football hasn’t been the same since Xbox (or any video game system) came to market. Or have the top players since then just not been video gamers? Remember this whole dead period argument exists because kids are now doing stuff year round, not because they have too much time and are using that time to play video games.

I will agree that the later start makes sense as far as heat index goes, but the schedule of acclimation and acclimatization that the KHSAA requires of football practices would make it hard to get it all in before the game. See the KHSAA bylaw 23 Limitation of Seasons specifics for football and you can see what I mean.

Basically, in 4 weeks you would have 1 week of helmets only, 1 week of lighter contact in shells, 1 week of full pads slowly increasing contact, then your scrimmage week where you are limited to only 90 minutes of full contact in that week. Although I do not condone hitting the crap out of each other all summer, I do believe it to be a bit reckless to send kids into a scrimmage with such limited time in full pads. Your time table may not be feasible due to safety.

July 10th is the end of dead period because it is 3 weeks prior to August 1st (first day full contact) and allows ample time for the acclimation and acclimatization of athletes to the equipment and elements. The additional weeks after August 1st until the first competition are necessary for scrimmages and getting the kids back to school schedule.

Diocese of Covington Schools have an additional week in their dead period to make it 3 weeks. It extends an additional week into July. I like that idea.
