Just rolling in from Lexington. Random thoughts:

    1) The tailgating for CovCath fans tonight was epic.
    2) Madison Southern o-line impressed me. Some big strong kids on that line. The running back and quarterback were big kids as well and the Colonels had trouble getting them to the ground much of the game. And this is a good tackling Colonel defense.
    3) What else can be said about the Colonel offense? With all the scoring they did tonight, it really put MadSouth into a bind with their play calling.
    4) CovCath put a running clock on every Kentucky team they played this year. That feat may be tied, but will never be broken.
    5) Thanks to the players and coaches for a fantastic ride this year. One to remember!

Congratulations to Covington Catholic on an amazing season and on the state championship. Running clocks on every team in KY during the regular season and postseason is something that doesn’t happen hardly ever, awesome team.

Congratulations to the (15-0) - 2017 Kentucky 5A State Champs!!!

This perfect and very special Colonel team has set the bar so high, and while it's completely expected of them to return next season to defend their title, we may never see the likes of a football team at CovCath like this ever again, or at least for a very long time.

Colonel history has truly been made.

Not a bad 50th Anniversary Season gift to the CovCath community!!!

Got to see the first half. The overall size and athleticism of CovCath were on display last night. The offense has so many weapons. You have to respect Mayer running or throwing. His receivers are big and make incredible adjustments -- get it close and they come down with it. And the Colonels have several so you cannot focus on any one of them. Then there is the running game and they have several very good runners too. And the line creates holes and protects the QB - excellent offensive line. Overall one of the best offenses I have ever seen. I hear they get several of those kids back next year. With the first rate coaching they have it should be another good year for the Colonels.
Hats off to Madison Southern. They played a very tough game but like was said above with the way CovCath puts pressure on you because they score so often it changes your game. I can see MS just grinding most teams into the ground. Couldn't keep it up enough vs the Colonels defense. Several times the MS defense was also in position to make plays but the Colonels were just too good.
Congrats to both teams on great seasons!!

Unless I missed something, there was zero coverage of Beechwood or Cov Cath by the Enquirer this weekend.

You missed it on the Beechwood part, Saturday's paper page 7 in the sports section, nice article by James Weber. I am guessing the deadline passed to get CCH info in todays paper, Weber was tweeting from the game, so I think it will be in tomorrows paper.

LEXINGTON - Madison Southern was not able to find a way to slow down Covington Catholic's high-powered offensive attack on Saturday at Kroger Field.

The Colonels (15-0) scored touchdowns on each of their first five possessions and pulled away for a 49-13 win over the Eagles (11-4) in the Class 5A state championship game. Covington Catholic finished with 476 yards of total offense and averaged more than 11 yards a play.

Senior A.J. Mayer led the charge for the Colonels. The quarterback had six touchdowns (three passing, three rushing) as Covington Catholic won its seventh state title - and first since 2006. Mayer was 11-of-15 passing for 337 yards and rushed nine times for 71 yards.

Link>>> Covington Catholic whips Madison Southern for Class 5A football title

    Jason Frakes, Louisville Courier Journal

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Covington Catholic High School football team completed a dominant season in dominating fashion.

Quarterback A.J. Mayer threw three touchdown passes and rushed for three more scores as the Colonels beat Madison Southern 49-13 in Saturday’s Class 5A championship game at the University of Kentucky’s Kroger Field.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, Covington Catholic (15-0) recorded the first undefeated record in program history. All 12 of the Colonels’ victories over Kentucky competition ended with the running-clock mercy rule, which goes into effect when a team takes a 36-point lead.

The Colonels improved to 7-0 all-time in state finals and won their first championship since 2006.

    From the Cincinnati Enquirer:

Link>>> STATE CHAMPS: What a season for Covington Catholic

    James Weber, jweber@enquirer.com

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 50th season of Covington Catholic football has been one for the record book from day one. From a refurbished stadium, to multiple trips down memory lane to honor the team’s history, to one dominating win after another, the Colonel faithful have had a lot to celebrate.

There was only one proper way for this season to end, and the Colonels delivered with another classic performance in their final game of the year.

CovCath defeated Madison Southern (11-4) 49-13 in the Class 5A championship of the 2017 Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl on Saturday night at the University of Kentucky’s Kroger Field.

“It feels great. All the alumni, it’s for you guys. Thank you,” said junior Casey McGinness. “We’ve worked hard since January and it finally paid off.”
