Class A Final: Mayfield/Newport Catholic discussion

Page 8 of NewCath has to come out on fire for two reasons. The most obvious is that they need to get Mayfield out of their comfort zone. Make the QB beat you. Fr... 162 comments | 8823 Views | Go to page 1 →

I don't think poll results from 200 voters of which probably 95% have not seen both teams play, will get anyone fired up.

Unfortunately, that is somehwat the way the Tigers were after they thumped Danville, and the real test for the Cardinals may be staying grounded.

NCC is not going to beat up on Mayfield's OL. I think their backs are good enough to punch it for 3 yards a pop against NCC. Less than the 7 a pop against Bardstown, but still good enough to keep good field position. NCC may throw against Mayfield, but I don't think they're going run a whole lot.

Whoever punches the other early may take the wind out of the other's sails. In the end, I think it could come down to kicking. Mayfield's punter got some awful good hang time, and their field goal kicker is excellent. I said a 10-pt. game before, I'll revise to Mayfield 27 - NCC - 21.
Hearsay...that is a very good point...especially the final two paragraphs, and I can see why you would think the first paragraph about Mayfield being on high emotion as were the Tigers after they beat Danville...now if we had played and beaten Danville last week with them being our main nemisis over the past 15 years or so then I would say then we could still be floating on cloud nine...but I say this next part with no disrespect to Bardstown, their players, their fans or coaching staff...Bardstown has not established themselves with the elite four of Danville, NCC, Beechwood, and Mayfield...at least not on a statewide level yet. You guys had an OUTSTANDING team and we have all the respect in the world for you guys...and in a few years we may all be talkign about the elite "5" with Bardstown thrown in...so as far as Mayfield being overly high about beating Bardstown last week I don't think so...now they may come out emotionally skyhigh with playing in the state championship and not be able to do anything that will have to be determined Saturday night. In my opinion the winner of the game will be decided by the placekicker that can adjust to playing on smaller goalposts on PAT's and field goals by playing on a college field with college goalposts...that could be the difference one way or another. If that is the case then it will be another nailbiter supreme. Can't wait until Saturday...oh and Cards fans I found out today from a very reliable source that the official who threw the flag on the Mayfield bench in the first quarter will be one of the officials for the game Saturday night as there is a mixed crew from the different conferences that will call the games and that guy from the Big 8 conference is one of the linesmans...so could be interesting have to wait and see.

He was better than the guy on their sideline...he threw a flag on our WR from the opposite sidline like 30 yards away!

    Good point Hearsay!

Fortunately or unfortunately, Bardstown moves back to AA in '07 and I would say we'll be there for a while, so we won't have the chance to re-match very often . . . I'm not sure I'd put NCC in there just yet, either . . . What you don't want is the side judge who threw the "illegal shift" on B-Town with 1:55 to go. Any ref who reaches for his flag because he's confused is dangerous and has no business in the state championship game (as you can see I'm still sour grapes about that). We've watched replay after replay and are still looking for what we did wrong . . . Nevertheless this is a state game post and we aren't in it. Cards line + Dumas = too much for NCC.

I was reading this article http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky...s/13289154.htm, most of the stats are even, with the exception of a considerable amount more of passing yards for NCC. But the biggest stat that glares out at me is that Mayfield has allowed 891 passing yards on the season compared to NCC's 1,714. I would have thought that Mayfield would have allowed more than that. What do you guys think?

From looking at the stats, Mayfields QB has thrown for more yards than NCCs with only 1 less TD, but, he's got 13 ints to only 5 for Diehl...It appears that NCC has about 30 more completions, so, they may be more of a short, controlled passing game with the occasional bigplay, but, who knows...I agree, overall, the stats look very similar...Should be a great game...Can't wait...Go Cards!!!
