I don't know about the Conner game I didn't go to that game. I guess you would have to be there to know what I am talking about. They ran a lot of the same playes over and over, same formations and didn't even try to get Meyer the ball much. I haven't seen FD play so I can't make an educated prediction on the Championship but I will definitely be there to watch.Advertisement

You’ve never seen a team take a week of practice for a weak opponent and use that time to build plays not seen on film for future use?

Dec 1, 19, 11:01 AM #49That’s not really what we’re talking about. The claim is Cov Cath just ran a segment of their regular playbook to not show Highlands their full playbook. Their full playbook was used in other games on film. For some reason because Highlands offense is bad. Highlands Defense is really good so not sure how related. I don’t understand it because the result was Highlands was a play away from making it a game. If I was coach I’d try to score as much as possible. If you want to call Highlands weak fine, but it doesn’t fit the narrative. Why would they not want to show them everything out of preparation of a second meeting if they are so bad? Either Highlands is bad or they’re not, there are big holes in the theory.

Here is a link about the coaches at Douglass and Covington Catholic from their time together playing at Georgetown College. It’s a good read.

Dec 3, 19, 02:40 PM #56I have not seen Frederick Douglass but I have seen Covington Catholic several times over the past couple years. Someone mentioned above that you should try to run wide on Covington Catholic. I don't think that is a good strategy. It is very rare that anyone ever gets the edge on their defense. I think you are much better off running straight at them. Their defensive linemen are not big and they usually go out of a 3 man line. It will be a grind and you probably won't get big plays but you will avoid negative yardage doing that. I have read that Frederick Douglass has a big and talented office of line. They should use that power and go straight at Covington Catholic. Use two back sets, misdirection and false reads and run it between the tackles.

I can't wait to see this game. Heard really good things about FD. Eviston is a coach that isn't afraid to gamble so there should be some very interesting situations in this game.

Dec 4, 19, 09:07 AM #58Cov Cath is requesting that all alumni in attendance wear their letterman jackets. One of my favorite traditions for the state finals games.
From Twitter:
Did you wear one of these in your days at CovCath? Please retweet! We want to see as many CovCath letterman jackets, old or new, at Kroger Field in Lexington on Saturday at 8pm for CovCath's game in the 5A football state championship! Make the stands a sea of blue and white!

I know Cov Cath's run defense is spectacular but have they seen an offense that runs it like FD?

Dec 4, 19, 10:41 AM #60It's hard to find a completely apples-to-apples comparison to Douglass in Cov Cath's schedule, but the closest you'll come by is Cincinnati LaSalle.
LaSalle's total yardages are lower than Douglass' are over the course of the season, but that's completely a product of strength of schedule. LaSalle's schedule is much harder than Cov Cath's schedule, and it's much harder than Douglass' schedule. This season, LaSalle's overall offense has been 63% run 37% pass, and Douglass' overall offense has been 68% run 32% pass. Similar to Douglass, LaSalle also has six D1 recruits on their roster, including a D1 running back (3-star Northwestern commit Cam Porter). Like Douglass, LaSalle has a quarterback that is more than capable of running the ball himself - both Douglass' quarterback Josh McClurg and LaSalle's quarterback Zach Branam lead their respective offenses in rushing rather than the D1 running back lining up behind them. So yeah, LaSalle is going to be the best comparison you're going to get.
LaSalle (OH) 2019 Season:
3400 total yards offense (243 per game)
2144 yards rushing (153 per game)
1256 yards passing (88 per game)
Frederick Douglass 2019 Season:
5095 total yards offense (364 per game)
3480 yards rushing (249 per game)
1615 yards passing (115 per game)
