Class 3A Playoffs: #5 Lexington Catholic at #4 Belfry

In what could be the game of the week across the state, Lexington Catholic, 8-3, travels east to 9-2 Belfry. Neither team has shied away from competition this season. Lexington Catholics' losses are to 5A Highlands, 2A Desales, and 3A Boyle County. Belfry's losses are to highly rated in WV Huntington High and 4A #1 Johnson Central. The teams have 2 common opponents this season. Belfry defeated Garrard Count 42-0 and Pike County Central 47-6. Lexington Catholic defeated Garrard County 39-22 and Pike County Central 58-18. This will be a great game and a tremendous environment. There are few places in the state that are more enjoyable to watch a game in than CAM Stadium. What are the keys to the game and who wins?

If I was a travelling man then this is where I would be this week. I don't have a prediction yet but Belfry better be ready to play. Lexington Catholic is very dangerous. Definitely one of the better games of the week across the state.

    Here's my bold prediction

I like Belfry to win big.

I think LexCath sustains against Belfry's "bend but dont break" Defensive style, but the Pirates get some key stops.

Meanwhile, I think Belfry's Offense will be a nightmare for LexCath

The state finals from a few years ago showed what a bad matchup Belfry can be for LexCath. However, if I'm a Belfry fan, Beau Allen worries me. I wouldn't want him standing comfortably in the pocket and making uncontested throws all night. I do think the Pirates advance by 2-3 scores, though.

This is the biggest threat Belfry's seen in the second round since... Mason County in 2010??? It's been awhile.

Hard to believe one of these two teams will be out in the second round.

This has probably not been the case for either for a long time.

Since the calendar moved to the 2000's, the Pirates have failed to reach the Regional Finals twice. 2000 and 2009.

Lexington Catholic has not reached the Regional Finals only once. When they lost a second round game back in 2003. The other 17 years they've made it to the 3rd. round.

Something is going to give this year.

It’ll be hard to get out of Belfry with a win.
