Are you asking this question because of last night's score? You have to tell me first why you think CAL is the best team in the state, and winning by a wide margin over DeSales is not nearly enough.

CAL is a great team and this is not a knock to them but Cov Cath is clearly the best team in the state. Sure CAL has less than 80 points scored on them this whole season but Cov Cath has more yardage (rushing, passing, etc.) than CAL against tougher competition.

All that matters for any team is being the best team in your class. Fun to speculate but generally impossible to prove who is the best in the state.

CAL is ranked #5 in Cal Preps, though not perfect, are decent rankings. Covington Catholic, South Warren, Male, and Scott County are ahead of CAL. I think CAL is worthy of top 5, but not #1.

Wow, they will come out of the woodwork on this topic. Good thing they don’t give a best in state trophy. Cal just needs to worry about the next game.

No I'm not basing this off of last night's game, but it definitely doesn't hurt the argument. They have absolutely handled everyone they have played and against a fairly tough schedule. The only game you might argue was the first meeting with DeSales but even that one was 21-3 in the 4th quarter. They have, possibly, the best player in the state and by no means lean on him to win. I was just wondering what keeps people from naming them the best team in the state?

Perhaps the fact the season isn’t over.

Or there are other undefeated teams with a lot of talent still out there.

What keeps people from naming them the best in the state? Probably the fact that they aren’t the best team in the state.

That’s deep and convincing argument. Very articulate on your part. You won me over.

I do know that it is impossible to definitively say which team is better than the other if they have not met head to head. I have just been thoroughly impressed by CAL all year long and wanted to get the BGP faithful going this morning. Some of this post is based off me being a Mayfield fan and being very weary as to whether we can hang with them or not here in a couple weeks at the grocery bag.

I agree with Hatz. At this point we need to wait two more weeks. Personally, at this point I give the edge to Mayfield over CAL in 2A. CAL needs to win 2A first before we can go through this discussion.

That same statement is true for every team in every class. I want to see Covington Catholic beat South Warren before I say they are #1. I want to see what happens in 6A and who ends up on top there. CAL is in the top ten. I am not even sure they are in the top 5. They are in the discussion for top 5 but it isn't a slam dunk putting them in the top 5, let alone #1.

CAL is not the best team in the state. They are a great team with a great player, but they better worry about Mayfield instead of CovCath, Trinity, Male, Johnson Central, Boyle County, etc. etc.
