Madisonville's Joe Curry was a terrific football player/athlete. A defensive end, he had 3 fumble recoveries and 3 interceptions his Senior year when the Maroons went 10-0 in the regular up only four points a game He would have been a terrific receiver, though the coaches chose to keep him (and the rest of the starters) as one-way players. He was also the long snapper on punts.

He was 1st team all-state by the Courier-Journal and Associated Press. According to the C-J's poll of Kentucky's six major colleges, Curry was the 2nd best high school prospect in the Commonwealth behind only Mark Higgs of Owensboro.

    He played (some) at Kentucky.

(A track star, he was also the starting center on Madisonville's 32-2 basketball team in '84 that lost to eventual champion Logan County in the state tournament semi-finals.)
