It was throw back night at Edgar McNabb Field in Ft. Mitchell. Woody Hayes would have been proud. The Tigers lined up in the power I and ran it between the tackles all night long.
Beechwood received the opening kickoff and Ethan Stringer returned it across mid-field to the Frankfort 49. The Tigers then proceeded to hand the ball to Stringer at the back of the I and power I formation play after play after play. Stringer finished off the drive with a 10 yard run. A bad snap on the extra point made it 6-0 Tigers. Frankfort quickly showed they had a team to be reckoned with when they scored on thier first play of the game. QB Anthony Robinson hit Malik Frank on a slant route and Frank outran the Beechwood DB for a 74 yard TD catch and run. Frankfort botched the snap on their extra point also but Jalen Washington grabbed the loose ball, scrambled a bit then found Robinson for the 2 point conversion ... Frankfort 8 Beechwood 6. The Tigers looked to be stopped on their next possession but Brett Slusher converted out of punt formation on 4th down at the Beechwood 40. The Tigers then went on another old school, power football running drive. Joe Studer finished this drive with a 15 yard run, extra point no good ... with 1:10 left in the quarter it was Beechwood 12 Frankfort 8. On Frankfort's next possession, one of the key plays in the game happened when DT Riley McKown perfectly read a screen pass and intercepted the ball at the 25 yard line.
In the second quarter now, the Tigers' short field became a long field following a couple penalties, including an offensive pass interference call on a TD reception. The Tigers overcame the 1st and 30 with another TD reception that was also negated by penalty on a block in the back call at the 3 yard line. The odd series of plays ended with Beechwood getting into the end zone a third time with 8:31 to go in the half. The score came on a 2 yard Stringer run. The Tigers failed on a 2 point try making the score 18-8. Frankfort went 3 and out. The Tigers quickly had the ball again and proceeded downfield on another grinding drive. Stringer scored this time from 12 yards out, Mario German added the extra point and it was 25-8 Tigers with 2:27 to go in the half. Frankfort was not going to go down without a fight. The Panthers completed some key pass plays to move inside the 10. Then they used a well designed trick play halfback pass with Washington finding Rontez Mitchell in the end zone with 39 seconds to go, Bailey Spade converted the extra point to make the score Beechwood 25 Frankfort 15 at halftime.
The Panthers had a little momentum from that score and moved the ball for a couple first downs on their opening drive of the second half. Then Jeremy Burns intercepted a pass for Beechwood. The Tigers continued to use the power running game. The 65 yard drive ended with Joe Studer running in for the TD from 4 yards out at the 7:37 mark, German's extra point good, 32-15 Tigers. Frankfort once again showed what a quality team they are when they went on a 75 yard drive of their own, including a big 4th down pass completion to Frank. Robinson completed a 7 yard pass to Washington for the score. For some reason the Panthers went for 2 and it was no good, 32-21 Tigers with 2:42 left in the quarter. Beechwood's power running game appeared to be wearing on Frankfort as the Tigers picked up a couple big runs on their next drive. With 1:15 to go Studer scored from the 20 and German's extra point had the Tigers back to a comfortable lead at 39-21. The Panthers had to start taking some chances and Beechwood's Jacob Cottingham intercepted a long pass attempt.
The Tigers got off schedule and then QB Kyle Fieger was sacked forcing the Tigers to punt the ball. Frankfort went to their own running game but was stopped on 4th down. The Tigers then finished the scoring off when Joe Studer scored on a 55 yard run, German's XP getting us to the finla score of 46-21. Grant Plageman made a nice interception and the Tigers finished the game off in victory formation.
Ethan Stringer was a workhorse all night gaining 176 yards on 31 carries and 3 TD's. Joe Studer added 131 yards on 12 carries and 4 TD's. Kyle Fieger threw only 5 passes on the night, going 3-5 for 47 yards. Riley McKown and Bret Finck had big games on defense.
