The top 10 deck of teams did not change this week despite three losses by top 10 teams. However, those three losses shuffled the deck as 7 of the top 10 are sitting in a different position than they were last week. This week two of our top 5 face huge challenges that could knock them from the ranks of the undefeated. There are six undefeated teams left in 1A. We'll take a look at each of them and their prospects of staying undefeated after this week. That is a lot of ground to cover so we better get to it.

Last Week Review

1. Pikeville - For the second week in a row the Panthers took on a top 10 1A challenger and it took everything they had to pull out the win. The #6 Raceland Rams battled this game out all the way before falling 12-6.The Rams entered the game without injured QB Jacob Heighton and in this game they lost their new starting QB to injury too. The Rams only completed three passes in the game, with all three going to standout speedy WR Gunnur Lewis. Lewis turned those three receptions into 92 receiving yards and a touchdown. Lewis also had an interception and was the leading tackler in the game for the Rams. The flip side is the Rams also had three passes intercepted. Pikeville was led by RB Cody Raines with 21 carries for 97 yard. QB Isaac McNamee connected with Zac Lockhart on an 85 yard TD pass.

2. Campbellsville - For the second week in a row the Eagles dropped a close contest to a higher class opponent as 3A LaRue County edged the Eagles 36-35. Campbellsville's stars put up the numbers. QB Arren Hash threw for 278 yards and 3 touchdowns. Malachi Corley went for over 200 yards rushing and receiving and scored 4 touchdowns. This loss cost the Eagles a few places in the rankings.

3. Paintsville - The Tigers survived the rushing onslaught by 5A East Jessamine to hang on for a 41-35 win. East Jessamine rushed for 449 yards and completed only 1 pass for 7 yards. Paintsville QB Jake Hyden accounted for nearly 400 yards himself, 306 in the air and 63 on the ground, and added 12 tackles to lead the defense. That effort got the win and boosted the Tigers to #2 in 1A.

4. Williamsburg - Williamsburg had no problem with Frankfort, cruising to a 48-6 win. QB Dalton Ponder was 13/14 passing for 340 yards and 6 TD's.

5. Newport Central Catholic - The Thoroughbreds fought off the challenge from 2A Walton Verona and posted a 10-7. It was a defensive struggle as the Bearcats did not complete a pass in the game. A Sam Lavin field goal providing the margin of victory for Newport Catholic.

6. Raceland - See above.

7. Hazard - Here we have another team with zero passing yards as the Bulldogs kept 3A Floyd Central from completing a pass in their 34-8 win. Hazard almost tripled the yardage on the Jaguars in this easy win.

8. Crittenden County - The Rockets suffered their first defeat by a score of 36-14 to 2A #7 Caldwell County. The yardage totals in this game were almost even despite what the score might indicate.

9. Kentucky Country Day - KCD won easily over 5A Seneca 49-6. The standout player in this game for the Bearcats was LB Exavier Douglas who totaled 16 tackles and picked off a pass.

10. Louisville Holy Cross - Last but not least in our top 10, Holy Cross posted a win over 4A Holmes 21-14. The Cougars gave up 370 yards but their offense went for over 400 yards to get them the win.

Games of the Week

We have two big games to focus on for this Friday. These two games are right near the top of the list of games to watch in the entire state this Friday.

#1 Pikeville at 3A #2 Belfry - This will be quite the challenge for the Panthers. Belfry will be smarting from their first loss of the year last Friday. It was a strong showing by the Pirates against top notch Archbishop Alter in Kettering (near Dayton) Ohio. Pikeville has been pushed to the limit the last two weeks. It will take an even better performance for the Panthers to get the win in one of the most difficult high school football stadiums to grab a road win. Pikeville has only allowed 363 rushing yards total in their 4 wins. Belfry's vaunted rushing attack can put that total up in one night. A Pikeville win in this one would be extremely impressive.

#3 Williamsburg vs 2A #1 Somerset - On paper, Williamsburg looks like even more of an underdog to the Somerset Briar Jumpers. These two teams are both undefeated and both have been dominating in all their wins. Williamsburg is tops in 1A with a 35.5 point scoring margin over their opponents. Somerset tops that with a 44.7 scoring margin, tops in 2A and third in the entire state. Williamsburg QB Dalton Ponder has completed 74% of his passes, 1182 yards, 13 touchdowns and just one interception. Somerset's QB Kaiya Sheron is not far off those numbers completing 72% of his passes for 648 yards, 8 touchdowns and no interceptions. Sheron's numbers are in one less game than Ponder's. Just like Pikeville, a win by Williamsburg would be extremely impressive.

The Undefeated

Pikeville (4-0) and Williamsburg (4-0) are two of the undefeated remaining in 1A. As noted above, both have huge challenges to overcome this week to remain undefeated. Here are the other 4 undefeated teams left in 1A.

Kentucky Country Day at 5A Iroquois - The Bearcats take on a 5A Louisville area school for the second week in a row. Iroquois is winless in 4 games and has been shut out in 3 of those losses. The Bearcats' strength of schedule is not good and this game sure won't help. KCD does have one solid win, 41-39 over a good 2A Washington County team.

Eminence at Bethlehem - Eminence has made a strong return to KHSAA football. Their strength of schedule is even lower than Kentucky Country Day's. Unlike KCD, this week will be a challenge for Eminence (3-0). Bethlehem is 3-1 against a tougher schedule than Eminence. This game will show us how strong Eminence is this year.

Pineville at 2A Middlesboro - Pineville also is benefiting from a weak schedule. Their schedule is even weaker than those of KCD and Eminence. Pineville is led by RB Colby Frazier who is currently number 3 RB in class 1A. Middlesboro has been playing solid football. Pineville will have a stiff challenge.

Berea vs. Jenkins - This game might not be played. Jenkins is having trouble fielding a team. If it is played, Berea should be able to stay undefeated. For the second year in a row, 1A has a team that is rising from the ashes. Last year it was Fulton County and this year it is Berea.

Good luck to all the 1A teams this weekend!
