These are the times that are going to try the Dayton Football Program's soul.

After a resurgence of sorts, a new coach from their ranks, and a 4-1 start, the good stuff has been followed by a thrashing by Berea, and an "upset" of sorts by their local rival, Bellevue, in a 33 point turnaround from a previous encounter, this time at home.

In a game that will do neither one of these teams any good, the upcoming decimation on tap from NCC, will cause the faith of these Greendevils and their fans to be further shaken.

Dayton has traditionally started seasons upbeat and somewhat optimistic, but by season's end tend to succumb to defeat and the rigors of a long, non-productive season, often losing players and enthusiasm along the way.

I really hope that Coach Herbst can weather this time frame that would challenge the character of any program, let alone one as fragile as the Dayton Greendevils. I further hope that as they move forward they can build on the foundation that they poured in the first five weeks of the season, and will continue to re-instill the pride and competitiveness of this once tradition-rich River City football program for the long haul.

The really bad news here is that it will probably not be one-done with the Breds, but unless the Greendevils can right the ship and beat Ludlow on October 25th, they can look forward to yet another ignominious trouncing by the Breds in district tournament play on November 8th.

    Trying times, indeed!!!

That is exactly why last week's district game against Bellevue meant so much to Dayton this year. Had they won that game they could have played Ludlow twice rather than the Breds twice.

I hope both teams avoid injuries in this game.
