It’s way too early to try to predict who Coach Hicks will be starting in June, much less in December and even less in March. It may change from game-to-game depending upon who he thinks will get the job done. There is a rumor that 6’ 9” freshman-to-be Dakari Johnson from Sayre will be a Cardinal this coming season. Otherwise, this season’s team will resemble some of the successful SCHS teams from the recent past with no players over 6’ 5”. They will play scrappy defense, and very likely share scoring fairly equally among four to six players. Balanced scoring (over the season) could make the Cardinals very difficult to defend.
Every one of the top seven have been going toe-to-toe with five outstanding upperclassmen (Euton, Jackson, Guyn, Flannery and Schu… three were All-Staters and four earned college scholarships) for the past two seasons. There’s no doubt that SCHS will miss the graduating seniors, but I wouldn’t count on this team being an easy homecoming date.
Players returning from the Varsity Roster last season:
Returning Varsity Seniors-to-be
Tanner Shotwell – 6’ 4” – Jumps out of the gym, good rebounder, solid forward with perimeter skills, developing all facets of his game, getting some quality looks from some good schools.
Robbie Barber – 6’ 4” – Was earning PT when he broke right arm in late December. Excellent shooter, adding muscle, natural 2-guard, will likely play some forward and handle the ball a bit too. Also getting looks from some good schools, could be the sleeper of this year’s senior class.
Trey Relford – 6’ 0” – Good athlete, definite potential to play beyond high school.
Returning Varsity Juniors-to-be
Tamron Manning – 6’ 3” – Very athletic, one of the top prospects in class of 2012. Will play college ball.
Isaiah Ivey – 6’ 2” – Also athletic, good finisher in transition, another top prospect in class of 2012. Will play college ball. Looks taller than listed height.
Zach Bryant – 5’ 10” – Scrappy guard. Good handles, can shoot.
Josh Harris – 6’ 1” – Aggressive defender/rebounder… plays bigger than 6’ 1”.
Matt Peterson – 6’ 5” – Big strong defender, good rebounder, can score in the post.
Others who will likely contribute:
Kymble Harris – 6’ 3” – Sr – Good kid, good worker, good spot-up perimeter shooter. Dressed and played some varsity last season.
Avery Ford – 5’ 11” – Jr – Quick and athletic, a spark plug off the bench. Dressed and played some varsity last season.
Quin Richardson – 5’11” – So – Physically mature for grade level, good head for game. Natural PG. Dressed and played some varsity last season… will likely see good minutes for varsity this season.
Zach Humphrey – 6’ 1” – So – Blue-collar scrapper with good skills. Will play hard in any position. Dressed and played some varsity last season.
Dakari Johnson – 6’ 7” – Fr – More like 6’ 9” this year, may eventually top out above 7’. Has that rare trait that’s hard to coach… height. Big upside between now and senior season. (Dressed and played varsity for Sayre as an 8th grader last season.)
Christen Cunningham – 5’ 6” – Fr – Quick, heady guard. Has grown since last season.
Dylan Portwood – 6’2” – Fr – Was solid in middle school and freshman ball. Younger brother to former standout Tyler Portwood. Will be a solid contributor.
DISCLAIMER – All the heights listed are from last season. Many of these kids have grown, but actual heights would just be a good guess at this time. There are several other quality underclassmen who will undoubtedly step up and earn some playing time and make positive contributions. I know I am overlooking some and apologize in advance for omissions… please add them as necessary.
