Rankings: Kentucky boys Class of 2013
4 players from the 10th region in the top 25.
Two of the biggest stars the state of Kentucky has seen in a while are in the Class of 2013 - Derek Willis of Bullitt East and Trinity’s Darryl Hicks.Willis has already committed to Purdue after a ridiculous spring that saw him rise as high as No. 20 in one national set of rankings, while Hicks sat out last season after transferring to Trinity but is having a big-time spring with his AAU team.
It’s going to be fun to see how the two continue to improve.
As far as the best, it’s nearly impossible to say is one is going to be better than the other so right now I went with Willis based on his size and the commitment.
Here’s the top 25:
• 1. Derek Willis, Bullitt East, 6-8: He can do so many things for his size. Big-time talent.
• 2. Darryl Hicks, Trinity, 6-4: Talented kid who didn’t miss a beat sitting out a year.
• 3. Dominique Hawkins, Madison Central, 6-0: Didn’t know a lot about him until this spring but he has a shot to be a standout.
• 4. Mike Smith, Sayre, 5-10: Just a big-time scorer with a load of talent.
• 5. James Quick, Trinity, 6-2: Football star could be a major Division I prospect if he spent much more time on the hardwood.
• 6. Larry Morton, Bryan Station, 6-3: One of several talented players for the Defenders.
• 7. Darius Brown, Paducah Tilghman, 6-4: An imposing player for his size.
• 8. Lavonne Holland, Ballard, 5-11: Will be able to see just how good he is this year after the Bruins lost some top seniors.
• 9. Rusty Troutman, Bullitt East, 6-3: Overshadowed a bit by Willis but he’s talented.
• 10. Omar Prewitt, Montgomery County, 6-4: Will only get better as he gets stronger.

Disagree with Mason Monroe being so low. He was the best player in the 10th regional tournament last year that wasn't wearing a Clark County uniform. I don't agree with Prewitt being ahead of him, and definitely don't agree with Gillispie being ahead of him.

I like Mason Monroe as much as anyone! The kids a true leader that plays with passion and a lot of heart. So many times these rankings are based college readiness and I think Omar Prewitts 6'4 body is probably more appealing to colleges.
Just my opinion

Monroe is a good player and deserving of recognition but Prewitt is deserving as well. He has had an incredible high school career averaging 17 per game as a freshman and 19 per game as a sophomore. He also averaged about 9 rebounds per game. I agree that when he gains some strength his stock will continue to climb, but he is very good right now.

I think before it's all said and done you'll see either Quan Palmer or BJ Coston of Holmes on this list as well toward the bottom. Both are very good athletes with high ceilings.

Prewitt is killing it in Indy. 8 3s in one of his games. Even Dan Dakich tweeted that any college coach looking for a shooter needs to check him out.

Timmons goes to Franklin County. I haven't seen him on the AAU circuit and I believe that goes into it because Demling can only see so many kids. Having said that, Timmons is very good, but isn't a no brainer Top 25. If he has improved his jump shot, then I will change my mind and say he is Top 15, maybe higher. But, please don't miscontrue my comments, he is a heck of a player and I can think of another 10-15 kids in the class that could make a case for getting ranked.
Of course, from what I understand, basketball is not even his future sport. Didn't Demling rank him pretty high in his football rankings?

You've seen him play Rainman, and you are right about him not having a stellar jump shot, but he has absolutely given kids like #3 Hawkins from MC fits. Timmons has to rank in the top 5 as far as speed, quickness, and explosiveness. He defense can be unreal, he can flat out get to the rim, and he can make free throws (shoots a bunch). Yes he is football first, but also a lot of fun to watch on the hardwood. Three sport transfer Logan Woodside will be a great addition to FC. Friday night lights at FC should be interesting with Woodside at QB and Timmons at tailback

Before Monroe, Palmer and Coston should be Nick Jackson. Quan and BJ are two great players but Jackson also fills a leadership role.
