    Default Newport 2012/2013

Basketball season for 2012/2013 should provide another exciting year. What should we expect from Newport ? Remember, please be constructive.

The Wildcats lost a lot of seniors, but had a nice JV team last year. Scrappy without a lot of size. Biggest issue is you just never know who is going to show up and play. Tough district to get out of unless they can win the coin flip.

Snapp will put a good team on the floor next year regardless. They will have to hang their hat on the SR's in Cody Pearson, Jayshawn Short and Tim Guilkey. The other Short brother will help out at the guard spot.

Short can score the ball off the dribble and Pearson is a nice player.

Agree, but still think it will be very tough for them to compete with Highlands and NewCath in their district.

You just never know who will show up for Newport. Last year in their regular season game vs. Highlands they shot almost 60% from the field and won by 2 points at Highlands.

Think about the kids who are not playing. Could have been a really good team this year. Tim Guilkey is not playing this year, he has decided to work.

Apparently the Wildcats have picked up a 6'6 transfer who will give them some much needed size in the middle. I am assuming the young man is from Cincinnati. Anybody have details on who it is and his skills?

It that rumor is true, they will have the makings of a nice team. They are undersized, but play hard. It could make the blind draw come into play for them and Highlands. I still think NCC is the team to beat in the 9th.

Don't know his skill level, but heard he is good. He is enrolled at Newport.

And the game of Cincinnati, Covington and Newport musical chairs with athletes continues.

Champions aren't made in gyms.Champions are made from something they have deep inside them. They have to have last minute stamina; they have to be a little faster; they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.

Nature of the beast. All three districts have very transient families. Obviously, that can result in a nice athletic transfer every once in a while. However, as you can imagine from an academic standpoint, having a highly transient population takes its toll on classroom achievement. Granted, every once in a while, you hit the athletic jackpot with a transfer. As someone with roots in Newport--both professionally and as a student-- I'll say this: I'd be willing to bet all three of the districts you mentioned would rather pass on the athletic transfers if it meant a steadier enrollment where kids weren't just "district hopping" every two or three months. It's hard to establish a solid academic foundation when a kid is moving from district to district like that. Gotta give the good with the bad.

The newest Newport transfer is about 6' 4" very thin. I've seen him play, he will block a few shots and get you some boards he's not very strong/physical on either end of the floor. He is not a game changer for the cats. Word has it there are more transfers on the way.

Will the new transfers also put in a request to be an Aid to the coach when they enroll? Or will they transfer back to there original school to graduate in the spring? Enquiring minds wanna know.
