    Default Highlands 70 Beechwood 46

    Final in Ft Thomas.

I kind of figured the Birds would have their way. Any details? Also was it a sweep? I know the frosh won handedly how did the JV game end up?

The JV game was won by the Birds in convincing fashion. It was enjoyable to watch the Birds play a game where they were allowed to "play" rather than move as robots. Much better flow to this game, thus the resulting final score. Benches were emptied with about 4:00 minutes to go in the game. Good to see George Grote back in action, looked a little rusty, but boy can he take his man off the dribble. Could be the spark the Birds need down the stretch.

Smith-Keller with 3 trey's last night and 13 points. Good to see the young man play well. He and Stewart will both be key for the Birds from here on out with Grubbs out for the season.

Pretty balanced scoring from the Birds. They took over at the end of the first half and just ran with out. Tigers were outmatched from the start.

...on a side note, found it interesting that Highlands stayed in their locker room while the visiting team was announced and came out after the visitors were announced. I have never seen that before. Somewhat of a different pre-game set up. I don't know what I think about it. Anyone else see this?

I guess I interpret that as a lack of respect for the opponent. Why would they not be on the bench for that? I am not sure, but if the Beechwood practice is for the guys to go shake the hand of the other teams coach as they are announced, they could not even do that. Wow I mean I have heard of teams coming out late to start the second half, but not the game? Was the national anthem played, and the Highlands players not on the floor for that either? Just trying to visualize what sequence of events were

I'm pretty sure Highlands has done this all year....I could be wrong.

I remember seeing highlights on ICN6 and they showed the players being announced and coming out of a "Highlands curtain" when being announced with the bench players being lined up to run in between.

Maybe someone else can clarify who has seen them more?

This was the first game I saw Highlands play at home, they did the anthem during warmups, which happens a lot. Highlands was down for that, and I think Beechwood was too. Then as the buzzer sounded to start the game, Beechwood kids lined up to do their starting lineups, they shake hands with the Refs. Highlands bench is empty. Then after Beechwood finished their starters the Highlands reserves ran out formed their lines and Highlands starters ran out of the curtain. I have never seen it done that way, I kind of thought it was dissrespectful to the opponent. But I may just be over sensitive!

I don't see how its disrespectful. Why does one team have to be on the floor to watch the other team be introduced?

I agree. Highlands has done this all year for intro's. I actually like the idea. Not disrespectful at all, IMO.

Maybe disrespectful is too strong of a word. Just found it to be strange. I have been watching High school games for many many years and never seen this done before.

Which makes it unique in a way.

As long as they're on the floor for the national anthem, I see nothing wrong with them being introduced the way you described.

Coach Flynn is trying to instill some new traditions at Highlands and I don't think it is disrespectful to the opponent. The opponent shouldn't be concerned with shaking hands with their opponents and more concerned with winning the game. They shake at the jump and after the game.

ok- I understand it now - I guess I can accept this better than what I was envisioning. I do find it a strange way of doing things, but I too do not find it disrespectful to the opponent necessarily.

Maybe the other high schools should start a tradition also and not offer a locker room when Highlands shows up at their home court. (Give em a port a potty). I have always seen both teams on the court during introductions and it should be no different under a new coach. The AD needs to step in and make an adjustment. In reality, I hope the other schools keep their class and respect for their opponents and be on the bench for introductions. Gotta be different

Have the coach on the floor to shake the opposing player's hands when they are introduced. Then have your players shake the other team's coach's hand when they are introduced. Let the kids have some fun.

Why does it matter how the two teams are introduced?

It's no different than a coach calling his players to huddle up after them being introduced and talking to them while the home team is being introduced and having an assistant stand at midcourt to shake hands with the opposing players. I find that more disrespectful than what's going on here.

I think some of you folks are way too sensitive. Why does every team have to conform to what other teams are doing. I don't need to see an opposing coach stand their waiting for my son to run over and shake his hand.

Back to the game, how did the Beechwood freahman handle the Birds defensive pressure?

Looks to me like something the kids enjoy. I am sure there is no disrespect intended. No one liked it 20 years age when the Michigan kids started wearing the long baggy shorts. Who is to say which way is right or wrong. Let the kids have some fun.
