Grant County at South Oldham 12-7-19 Predictions/Updates

Two of the higher-ranked teams in the 8th region go at it early in the season on Saturday, December 7th, when the Grant County Braves travel to Crestwood, KY to face the South Oldham Dragons.

South finished 21-10 last year and won the 29th District before losing in the first round of the 8th Region to Spencer County.... Grant County is coming off a 19-12 season and will be favored to contend in the 32nd this year after falling in the district semis last year.

South returns four starters from a team that set Kentucky records in three point shots made and attempted - breaking their own record. Luke Morrison, last year's 8th Region player of the year, is back for his senior year, after averaging a region-best 25.4 ppg and hitting 114 of 210 three pointers for an incredible 54.3%. Also returning is Seth Johnson (17.2 ppg), Nick Cranfill (7.6 ppg), and Jason King (7.4 ppg) - the top four scorers from a team that averaged 81 ppg in 2018-19 - the highest scoring team in KY.

Grant County also returns plenty of offensive firepower. 6'5" senior center Luke Dawalt led the Braves in scoring (14.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.5 reb) last season, and is as proficient at shooting the three as he is posting up inside. 6'2" senior Jack Epperson (11.0 ppg / 6.9 rebounds) and 6'1" senior Ben Vickers (11.0 ppg / 4.0 rebounds), combined with Dawalt, represent three of the Braves' top scorers AND rebounders from 2018-19.

New starter Dylan Hammonds will be one to watch for Grant County; the freshman has started for the Grant County JV team for the last two seasons, as a 7th grader and as an 8th grader.

Both teams have made improved defense a focal point in 2019-20; both will test each other in that regard.

This game looks to be one of the premier games between 8th region powers in week one...it should be a shootout in Crestwood.

Live video coverage of the game will begin at 7 pm ET (12/7/19) on The Pegasus Sports Network - PSN

Don’t think Grant County will be able to keep up with South this early in the season. Luke Morrison is as good as it gets in the 8th region and he will show that tomorrow. South will end up winning and it won’t be close.

Both teams with easy opening game wins.

South bounced Collegiate, 75-37, on the road.

Grant routed 8th region rival Trimble County at home, 87-36.

Grant now embarks on a four game road trip, beginning with a Thursday date at new 8th region rival Woodford County, before traveling to Crestwood for the big date with South on Saturday.

South hosts 5th Region foe Central Hardin on Thursday before hosting Grant on Saturday.

Per the KHSAA site, Luke Morrison was 1-6 from the 3-point line, finished with 9 points, and did not shoot a free throw last night against Louisville Collegiate. That's a surprising stat line for him.

Both South and Grant shot over 50% from the floor in their easy opening wins, both hit the three well, and both shot over 80% at the line. We'll see how each does next against tougher competition - Grant on the road tonight at Woodford County, who handled the Braves fairly easily last year, and South playing at home against Central Hardin, who beat the Dragons by 2 in OT last season.

I'm really looking forward to broadcasting this game....this sets up to be a pretty good early season test for both teams; a real measuring stick for how each has improved over the off-season, particularly on defense.

Both teams head into this contest with 2-0 records after solid wins on Thursday.

South pounded Central Hardin in Crestwood, and Grant County avenged a loss to Woodford County last year by beating the Jackets, 83-70. Both teams putting up a lot of points early on....Saturday will be fun.
