The Colonels, ranked second in the final Associated Press poll and third in the Litkenhous computer ratings, officially punched their ticket to next week’s Ninth Region tournament with the win over the scrappy Tigers.

    BEECHWOOD (18-13): Deatherage 2 1 5, Schilling 2 0 6, Brannen 5 0 12, Toebbe 1 2 4, Du. Baugh 2 2 7, Draud 1 7 9. Totals 13 12 43.

    COVINGTON CATHOLIC (27-4): Fredrick 9 0 21, Disken 1 1 3, Deere 1 0 2, Fleek 1 0 2, Davin 0 1 1, A. Mayer 8 1 18, Ruthsatz 1 1 4, M. Mayer 2 4 8, N. Thelen 1 0 2, Green 1 0 2, Walter 10 1 21. Totals 35 9 85

    Halftime, C 39-23. 3-pointers: B 5 (Schilling 2, Brannen 2, Du. Baugh), C 5 (Fredrick 3, Ruthsatz, A. Mayer).
Not sure who reports these stats but Ruthsatz had at least 6 points. He made a 3 and also was fouled on a missed 3 pointer and drained all 3 free throws at the end of Q3.

I can assure you, it wasn't me who reported the stats.

Covington Catholic is clicking on all cylinders, enjoy watching their ball movement. On a side note, super class act by the folks at Covington Catholic by honoring Coach Listerman. He seemed really moved by it. Thank you.

Is that good? Isn't he 7'-1"? I mean that's pretty Impressive by my Standards.

No-he had a off night, as he has had nights of 8-9 dunks. What is your point? I was just giving a observation.

Not sure Jake had an off night...I believe he was perfect from the field, had a lot of solid hook finishes in the paint, and was active on defense. Good nights for him and CJ.

Also, Ruthsatz did have at least 6 points, but apparently there were some clerical errors on the final stat sheet that may not have been corrected yet by the time they were published for print.

CJ slips ahead of Roger Tieman ('56), to fifth place on the school's all time scoring list.

Observations from a basketball outsider. I’m not impressed by the Big Man. Like most D1 recruits, he gets benefit of calls (and no calls) from officials. He had 4 definite fouls in the first half alone. I generally like when local kids go to next level, but I don’t see him succeeding at the next level. He relies purely on his size and the way he uses it, requires officials to look the other way. In the first Beechwood game, he didn’t impress me at all. Refs didn’t let him bully his way around the floor and I don’t think
He had more 8 pts. He did have a couple nice moves on some Put-Backs last night. I hope I’m wrong because I like for local kids to do well. Maybe coach Mack (sp?) can correct it.

Cov Cath definitely has some amazing talent and man, can they ever move the ball around and shoot.

Beechwood is slowly building a program. It sucks to get that draw, but they were in control of it, so the team is to blame for that. I’m slowly starting to become a BW basketball fan. I’m amazed and proud that BW has successful programs in Football, Basketball and Baseball. We just need Basketball and Baseball to make it over that hump. Thanks to coach Goetz and staff for the dedication and development of the program.

6-7 Games this year and hopefully many more next season.

I was being sarcastic about Jake.

I disagree on the fouls. Jake literally backs up one step on an opponent, and Beechwood would go crashing to the ground due to his sheer stature. What is he suppose to do? Is he not allowed to tangle with anyone due to his size?

CJ and Jake are going to have to improve on their offensive efficiency if the Colonels are going to be successful this post-season.

Watched last half of Beechwood/CCH game before HC/Holmes. CJ looked extremely good offensively in the portion I saw. He hit every mid range jumper he took...and he was a one man press on defense even when CovCath was not in the press. The kid plays with passion

I am looking at the stat sheet from Beechwood Statman and they have it as 6 point, 1 three and 3 FT. only took 3 shots all night.

    .

I expect him to play basketball, not football. Hell, the best Football Player on the basketball court last night played with far more finesse and control. You don't get to throw your size around simply because you are bigger. Well, apparently you do, but you shouldn't. You still have to control it. Especially when the defender is set. Isn't that the literal definition of a "Player Control Foul"? Same rule whether the player is 330 lbs or 130 lbs. btw... It was far more than one step and he's not just moving with his feet. He thrust whatever part of his body is closest to the defender. On Defense, he leans into and puts his arms out to obstruct the path of players moving without the ball. Saw it in two games now. They called one or two offensive fouls on him, but his worst offense was called a block on Beechwood. He lowered his shoulder and drove right into the guy. I know this because he's 18 inches taller than the player and his shoulder hit the guy in the chest. He has clearly been taught to use that size in any way he can.

As I said, its my outsider and casual basketball fan observation and I truly hope I'm wrong about him at the next level. Admittedly, I have only watched them against BW. I'm hoping to make a couple regional games so I can watch with less skewed vision. There's always a small chance I'm wrong I doubt it, but you never know.

I can't believe what I'm reading. Jake won't succeed at XU because he uses his size too much & bullies defenders? Hopefully he spends the offseason working on his perimeter game so he can please the Old Sports Dad. I doubt it, but you never know.
