Carl White named new coach at Shawnee

Carl White, who has been an assistant men’s basketball coach at Bellarmine University the past three seasons, has been named the boys’ basketball coach at Shawnee High School.
White, a former assistant coach at Eastern, was part of the Bellarmine staff that led the Knights to the 2011 NCAA Division II championship.
“To have someone of Carl’s experience on the middle school, high school and college level is a home run for us,” said Shawnee athletic director Dwight Bransford. “He comes from a championship program and is a guy with good character.”
White could not be reached for comment.
White is a graduate of Iroquois High School and Kentucky State University. After 22 years working as a systems engineer, he took a job as an assistant coach under Jason Couch at Eastern in 2004. The Eagles won two Seventh Region championships while he was there.
In three seasons at Bellarmine, White helped the Knights compile an 85-15 record.
“He really, really cares about young people,” Bellarmine head coach Scott Davenport said. “He’ll do a tremendous job.”
White replaces Bransford, who posted a 7-46 record in two seasons before becoming the school’s AD.

1973. That was when the state tourney was held at Freedom Hall.

When Shawnee won the Kentucky championship, I believe New Albany won the Indiana championship. The two schools are about 2-3 miles apart, just across the Sherman Minton bridge.
