Still hurting about the Devils. I see the Aces heading to the house (that prediction alone will probably give them the win). I agree with everyone that it will be a very good game, I just hope that the referees do not interject themselves into the game with bad officiating. Thanks for your breakdown of the games this year. I waited for them every week. I do feel like the joy of winning for who ever takes the crown tonight will be short lived due to the fact that they will more than likely be running into Covington Catholic which will in turn prove to be a wall as Bowling green as proven to be for devil football and mayfield has been for aces football. (It's coming, football is in the air) Not that it cannot be surmounted but in all likely hood, no. I agree with 58 (as much as I hate to admit it), Apollo has that look.

I do want to say congratulations to Corey Gardner for winning player of the year for the third region and to Coach Rod Drake for Coach of the year.

74Devil, sometimes in high school sports, teams come together in a way that can only be described as magical. I've seen it a few times in my lifetime: 2006 Apollo basketball, 2009 OHS baseball, 2015 OHS baskeball, 2016 Daviess County Soccer, and a few others that escape my memory.

Apollo has that look this year. 1-5, they can match up with about any team in Kentucky. IF Apollo was to win tonight and face CovCath at state, I honestly believe they'll have a shot. But to have that shot, Apollo MUST stay out of foul trouble. Malik and Corey Wilson (no relation obviously lol) come off the bench, but in VERY limited roles. There is no scoring off the bench that Apollo can rely on.

However, the way Apollo is playing on offense right now, I'm not sure how you stop it. Apollo shot nearly 60% against Ohio County, and they're able to get to the free throw line with their big guards driving the lane. James Graham has gone from a kid that was a complete afterthought, to a kid that I honestly believe could play low level D1 basketball. Hayden Shelton is going to Memphis to play for Tubby Smith (if he doesn't get fired) and Nathan Boyle is a low level D1 play IMO. Alex Gray will be a great fit at an NAIA program like Brescia and Angel Saldana is a great athlete at PG.

If Apollo can control the temp, keep shooting well, and James Graham can stay out of foul trouble, this Apollo team is flat scary 1-5. I was teasing Doug Denton (a member of Apollo's 2006 state runner up team) about this team having the same look and he said "we didn't have a guy like James Graham inside. Right now, nobody does. Apollo is legit. Having said that, Catholic has Tim Riley, so who knows what will happen

I agree 100%. Has catholic ever had a coach like Riley? I'm going to show my age but I think the last coach they had that was a true difference maker was Greibie. He was catholic's coach before Bruce Embry took over. Catholic battled OHS every year for the regional championship, but never got over the hump. Couldn't take the Aces lightly back then. They battled.

With all that, I believe Apollo gets rupp and cov cath. Be careful what you wish for.

As far as I can go back, Catholic has not had a coach like Riley. I do know that Catholic had some very good teams back in the 70's and 80's. But Tim Riley is a next level type of coach. I honestly think Riley could coach college basketball and be successful. Catholic really lucked into Tim Riley because of Riley retiring from the public system. It's remarkable the level of coaches that David Blanford has been able to get at Owensboro Catholic.

Tonight is going to be a war. Catholic is 4-0 against Apollo, and I'd still say that Apollo is better. However, you can't argue with 4-0. It's difficult to beat a good team multiple times in a year, and that's what Catholic will have to do tonight. OHS beat Bowling Green 3 times in 2015, twice during the regular season and once in the state championship.

    It's gonna be fun!

I agree with you statements about Riley. Let's see if Catholic's ad can work the same magic with the football coach.

Apollo it is! They played about as well as they could have in the first half and was able to keep Catholic at bay during some big second half runs. Seems like there have been different people step up every game thru the tournament. Alex Gray was that guy tonight. He played great defense on Luke Hayden and also came up with some big big buckets when Catholic put the pressure on. Hayden Shelton was big time again, knocking down 3 1st quarter 3's to set the tone. When Angel Saldana is hitting mid range jumpers, you know its probably going to be Apollo's night offensively(his game is running the offense and getting to the rim). He hit 3 in the first half. Overall, I think the better team won the game. I know its tough to say that when a team is 1-4 against another, but the only thing that matters is how you're playing at the end. Apollo just had the look after they beat Owensboro, and they carried that over into regional tournament play. Im happy for Coach Barker. The way he used the box and one during the run really took away what opposing teams want to do. Outside Ohio County, it worked very well. Twice on Hayden and once on Matthews, it was a big reason why Apollo is going to Rupp.

Dave couldnt have said it better. To broadcast EVERY 9th district and Girls/Boys 3rd Region game has been a blessing(and a lot of hard/fun work). It really is an honor to get to know all of these kids, parents and coaches. So many great people in our region. I never would have guessed anyone would care about my opinion on high school sports around Owensboro 5-6 years ago. Its been a heck of a ride.

Keep on riding!!!! Like I've said, you've done a great job. Book that flight to vegas before the magic wears off. They might give Cov Cath all they want. Regardless of where they came from, they are still champs of the 3rd region. I'll say this, if they don't respect em, Apollo might just show Cov Cath what everyone in the third region knows. Don't sleep on the Eagles.

Though I love what Coach Drake has done, if they had waited a week to vote, maybe Barker would have gotten Coach of the Year.

Apollo Fan98, Great job, always enjoy reading your post. I was a little surprised at this game, but Apollo just came out swinging and looked great and did just enough to keep Catholic out. The Graham kid is a difference maker! What a game though, I love these regional and district final games. Hope Apollo represents! Cov Cath is a beast, if they can come out and shoot lights out they have a punchers chance.

Good luck to Apollo at Rupp. Barker did an excellent job of getting his team ready for postseason.

Here is a list of the top 5 scorers and rebounders for the 3rd Region, as of today.

    Scoring:
    (1) Poole (Breckinridge) 23.6 Pts
    (2) Nofsinger (Muhlenberg) 23.3 Pts
    (3) Moore (Butler) 21.7 Pts
    (4) Matthews (Meade) 19.2 Pts
    (5) Gardner (Owensboro) 17.7 Pts

    Rebounding:
    (1) Patterson (McLean) 9.7 Rebs
    (2) Wright (Trinity) 8.6 Rebs
    (3) Matthews (Meade) 7.7 Rebs
    (4) Parker (Butler) 6.6 Rebs
    (5-tie) Gray (Apollo) 6.4 Rebs
    (5-tie) Parker (Ohio) 6.4 Rebs

Matthews was the only player to make the top 5 in both categories, but did not make first team all region. I wonder if the distance between Meade County and Owensboro played a part in this. I also think that Matthews being off the radar coming into this season played a role. It is fun to talk about what we expect before each season, but I think we put too much emphasis on early season rankings. It's hard for a kid in Meade to get noticed when you are so far away from the center of the 3rd Region universe

I don't want to point out any particular player comparisons because I'm sure they are all great kids who had tremendous seasons. However, I would argue that two of them are clearly not more worthy of being first team over Matthews (eye test, stats or otherwise).

ApolloFan98 - Had a great time following you this year. Awesome job! Great job on your tournament predictions as well.
