Matchups:

Boyd County vs. Russell:
Boyd County comes in winners of the 64th district tournament. The Lions make it to the regional tournament by defeating Rose Hill 86-39 and then defeating Ashland 60-53 in the district championship game. Boyd County comes in at 25-6 (15-4 region) and is carrying an 4 game win streak and have won 8 of their last 9 games.

Russell comes in as 63rd district runners-up. The Red Devils squeaked past Lewis County 70-64 in the semi-finals of the district tournament but fell to Greenup County 96-88 in the district championship. Russell comes in 13-18 (10-13 region) and aren’t playing so well, having lost 4 of their last 5 games.

These two teams met once earlier in the season and Boyd County didn’t have a problem putting out the flame that is the Russell Red Devils.

Elliott County vs. Fleming County:
The team that’s considered the team to beat, the Elliott County Lions. Elliott County comes in winners of the 62nd district where they had to edge out two different opponents. Elliott County escaped East Carter with a 45-38 victory over the Lions in the semi-finals of the 62nd district tournament. Elliott County would go on to face West Carter in the championship game and again, the Lions would escape another close game. The Lions defeated the Comets 64-61 to claim the 62nd district crown. Elliott County comes in 23-3 (17-1 region) having won 8 straight games.

Fleming County comes in as 61st district runner-ups. The Panthers defeated bath County 72-58 in the semi-finals of the 61st district before falling and falling hard to the Rowan County Vikings 76-55 in the championship game. Fleming County comes in 7-23 (7-13 region) and have lost 6 of their last 8 games.

This will be the first meeting between these two teams this season.

Greenup County vs. West Carter:
Probably one of the better first round games. The Musketeers come in as 63rd district champions and it wasn’t easy. The Musketeers escaped what would have been a major upset by Raceland, defeating the Rams 59-56. Greenup County would then go on to face Russell, in what would be another close game with the Musketeers escaping with an 96-88 win to claim the district crown. Greenup County comes in 22-9 (16-4 region) having won 6 of their last 8 games including a current 4 game win streak.

West Carter comes in as 62nd district runner-ups. The Comets would ease past Morgan County 74-63 before losing a heart breaker 64-61 contest to Elliott County in the district championship game. The loss snapped West Carter’s 12 game win streak. West Carter comes in 24-6 (15-4 region) having won 7 of their last 8 games.

These two teams split the regular season. Greenup County defeated West Carter 74-65 @ Greenup County….West Carter defeated Greenup County 98-93 @ West Carter.

Rowan County vs. Ashland:
The final opening round game. The Vikings come in as 61st district champions and they didn’t have a problem doing it. The Vikings eased passed Menifee County 62-48 in the semi-finals of the 61st district tournament and would go on to face Fleming County and again, the Vikings would ease past the Panthers 76-55 on their way to claiming the 61st district crown. Rowan County comes in 24-8 (16-4 region) having won 2 straight and 6 of their last 8 games.

Ashland comes in as 64th district runners-up. It would take everything the Tomcats had in their arsenal to get past Fairview in the semi-finals of the district tournament. Ashland would go on to face Boyd County in the championship game but didn’t do enough as the Tomcats fell to the Lions 60-53 in the championship game. Ashland comes in 13-18 (10-9 region), having lost 4 of their last 6 games.
