    Covington Catholic 5 Cooper 4 (8 innings)

Congrats to Cooper for not giving up and plugging away to keep this game close. Former CovCath player and Grad Coach Bob Beiger a huge tip of Theoldguy hat for the effort from your team today. The complex is looking great and players like Blank, Bquiquisk and Thompson give you something to build on.

The Good: The effort of David Brueggman in pitching today. He only found out at 4pm today that he was going to start as Michael Hellman had been sick and didn't feel quite well enough to pitch!

The Bad: Getting ten hits in this game but only scoring 5 runs of which one was unearned. If you counted mental errors as unearned runs, then at least one if not two of the remaining 4 runs would have been unearned too.

The UGLY: The error caused by no one calling for the very and I mean very high pop up in the 6th which led to Cooper scoring 3 unearned runs.

Pee Wee's Place Offensive play of the game: Seems soome were questioning a squeeze bunt and why teams didn't play to stop it. Well....
CovCath top of the 6th. Warning leads off with a shot between the CF and RF for a triple. Klein hits a double to score Warning from third. 2-0 CovCath no outs, man on second. Taylor Pinch Runs for Klein and goes to third but the Cooper catcher (btw the young man threw out two today at 2nd base) doesn't make a throw so CovCath has a runner on third and no outs. Now if you are a CovCath fan and heck Coach Beiger played for Krumps, you knew what was about to happen. On the first pitch Martin lays it down and Taylor goes home hard and fast and while the Cooper pitcher makes the pickup and makes the throw and the Cooper Catcher is there to make the tag, Taylor beats the ball and is safe. Now how fast did this play happen? Fast enough that the Cooper Catcher was able to then get up and throw out Martin at first base for rare 1-2-3 out at first base. Lankheit then walks and Severson goes 4-3 for the out to end the inning!

    Defensive play of the game:
Got to give this one to Cooper! CovCath top of the seventh and Schlagbaum the CovCath first batter hits a rocket and is standing on third with no outs and the score tied 3-3. However the Cooper pitcher gets three straight CovCath batters to go 6-3, three straight times, to get out of the inning!

Grubers Grill star of the game: Got to give the nod to Jake Lankheit as he did a very good job behind the plate tonight and knocked in the go ahead run in the top of the 8th.

    CovCath pitching:
    David Brueggman 69 pitches 6 innings 25 PA 5 hits 3 runs 0 earned runs 0 walks and 5 K's

    Matt Klein (W)27 pitches 2 innings 7 PA 1 hit 1 run 1 earned run 0 walks and 3 K's

    CovCath hitting:

Siemer 4 PA 2 hits and 2 cs
Warning 4 PA 1 run scored and 2 hits (triple)
Klein 4 PA 2 hits (double) 1 rbi
Taylor PR and 1 run scored
Gerwe 4 PA 2 runs scored 1 hit (double) and 1 walk
Martin 4 PA 1 rbi 1 sac bunt and reached base via E-6
Lankheit 4 PA 1 hit 1 rbi and 2 walks
    Reese and 1 run scored
    Severson 4 PA 1 hit 1 rbi 1 K and 1 fc
Schlagbaum 4 PA 1 hit (triple) and 1 fc
    Stein 2 PA
    Grosser 1 PA

CovCath record improves to 12-7 with the victory today and next plays in the LIT on Friday @ 8:45 PM vs Louisville St. X at St. Xavier and then goes play two games on Saturday again in the LIT. Thankfully Louisville St. X field is a turf field, so maybe even in the rain, CovCath will get to play some baseball.

Please say a prayer for all the families of the NDA girls injuried in the car wreck last Friday but please say a special prayer for the family of Maria Schaffstein. On Thursday at St Agnes the Mass of Christian Burial will take place. This is going to be one emotional day for all of the families, friends and NDA and CovCath student bodies!

Great job tonight by Senior Reuben Griggs who pitched outstanding for 5 plus innings. Cov Cath scored their first run when runners on 1st and 2nd and one out a hard grounder to 3rd and the third baseman steps on third for the 2nd out but then throws wild to 1st and a run scores. I believe this was 4th or 5th before the first run of the game was scored. Brownfield came in relief and did very nice job of getting ground ball after ground ball and Thompson played great defense at SS.

The main plays that helped lead to the loss was 2 balks called in the 8th and two mental errors in right field. This was the 4th right fielder of the night and the young man normally plays very little but always hustles and was put in a tough position with the score tied and extra innings. The big play was Cov Cath had 1st and 2nd and 2 outs and line drive hit to right field and he fields a bad hop nicely but then just tosses in toward 2nd base as the go ahead runs scores. It would have been a close play at best but fundamentals of knowing what to do with the ball on each situation hurt Cooper tonight.

Another tough loss against a quality team.

The young man behind the plate for Cooper did a great job tonight and it was in the 4th inning when CovCath scored the first run which was indeed unearned. If the 1st basemen comes off the base to catch the ball instead of trying to stretch to get the DP the run doesn't score. Sometimes it is better to give up the out, then to try to do to much and get burnt when it doesn't work.

Nice seeing you again sir! Good luck in the rest of the season!

CovCath is now 12-7. They have 21 games remaining on their schedule, including the 1 guaranteed District game. If they have 5 rainout's, the must go 8-8 over the remaiing games to keep Coach Krumps consecutive 20 win seasons in tact.

Should be interesting to see if they can keep things going.
