Beechwood baseball has HUGE conflicting challenges this weekend

Beechwood's 20-0 perfect record gets put on the line at 9:00 p.m. against 9th Region annual goliath Highlands this Friday night at major league Great American Ball Park. Certainly this is a regional match-up with lifetime memories for both teams to get to play at the homefield of the Reds that has hosted the best of the best that have made it to the pinnacle of their sport. A cherished challenge that will create memories for all.

On the flip side, Beechwood has a postgame 3 1/2 hour drive to Owensboro to meet Williamsburg in the All-A State Championship on Saturday morning. If they should win they will potentially have two more games facing them on Sat/Sun to become State Champs.

As a coach of a single A high school (with pitch counts a major consideration) do you hold back your best pitchers at GABP on Friday to go after the bigger picture? Knowing your upper classmen will never get another GABP or a Class A chance again do you just go for it all and whatever happens....happens? What say you, BGP baseball experts?

Yes, you hold back your pitchers. Tigers likely take their first loss against Highlands tomorrow night.

I think it’s a no brainer. Pitch your best in Owensboro. It is nice for the kids to play at GABP, but in the whole scheme of things it’s a meaningless regular season game.

What are the innings rules on pitchers? Could they throw the top guys one inning each without it messing up innings down state?

Innings don't mean a thing. Pitch counts dictate what rest is required. The pitch count rules are--

VARSITY LEVEL PITCHES THROWN IN ONE DAY REQUIRED REST
    Maximum Pitches – 120
76 pitches or more – Three (3) calendar days of rest
51-75 – Two (2) calendar days of rest
26-50 – One (1) calendar day of rest
    1-25 – No mandated rest

To answer the original question, I don't think it even requires any thought. The goal is to win the All "A". While playing at GABP is certainly a nice thing, winning or losing that game really means nothing. A loss doesn't ruin the experience, and a win really doesn't make it any more special. I've played in major league stadiums (Veteran's Stadium in Philly, and old Yankee Stadium), and while it was a cool experience, once the game started, it was just another baseball field. Winning the All "A" is much bigger deal than beating Highlands in a regular season game.

No way the Class A should be in Owensboro. Why not Lexington?

My guess is that Highlands will treat this game as an exhibition game. Pitch several different guys and do their best to get everyone in the game and hopefully at least 1 AB. That is how they played it last year against Covington Catholic at GABP.

I think both teams would have treated it like exhibition to begin with. Now, Beechwood will definitely treat it like an exhibition, as they have much bigger games looming on the weekend.

The game tonight at GABP is at 8:00pm, not 9:00.

Beechwood-Highlands game will likely determine the NKAC DivII champion, so it is much more than an exhibition game.

Since I seem to be only person on the planet who still tracks the conference races, it might not be all that meaningful to either of these teams, but it could be one of their team goals too.

I don’t think there’s even the slightest chance Beechwood values the NKAC over the All “A”. The only sport I ever hear teams place value on the NKAC “Championship” is wrestling, and that’s mostly because it plays a big part in regional seeding. Aside from the small schools, I don’t think very many follow or even care about the NKAC champions.

I'm not saying that the conference is more important than the "A", just that this game has more implications than merely an exhibition game.

I too hate that it has moved from Whitaker Park to Owensboro.
The All "A" is without a major sponsor since Touchstone Energy pulled out.
This move is strictly a matter of economics. It is being played at Owensboro Catholic's home field for "free".

Again, I’m not sure many outside of of a handful of folks (teams included)care about the NKAC implications. I’ve been heavily involved in NKY high school sports for nearly 15 years and couldn’t tell you anything about who has won the various NKAC championships.

Beechwood has already played quite a few guys that never get much varsity action and it's only the 4th inning. Coach Gray is emptying the bench, so I think we got our answer to how Beechwood would treat this game.
