You mean like with abstinence only education?

I bet cigarettes and drug overdoses killed more people than guns did.

The assault weapons ban that expired in 2007 (2004?) banned the AR 15 and multi -clip. He would not have been able to get those legally 10 years ago.

Been off the board for a couple of days. Glad to see no one politicizing this.

Legally, no. He still could have gotten them. I can name many legal guns that weren't included in that ban that would inflict as much damage. This has been covered on here in the past. Also, let's not forget guns and clips can be altered.

As cammando and TB&G pointed out, what about forks and spoons? By this guy's logic, that's why people are fat. Hey, I know, let's ban doctors, they've certainly killed plenty of people by misdiagnosing patients. Right? He claims, "Yes I know. People kill people". Yet he blames the gun.
Dr. Gary Cohan is a moron.
As for the graph, how about this: Switzerland has mandatory military service. The people there are issued their assault weapons after their service. They are considered part of the national militia. In 2006 there were 34 killings or attempted killings using firearms. There were 69 killings or attempted killings using knives.

I'm a second amendment believer as well....however, I can't help but wonder why everyone needs semi-automatic weapons. Do we really need assault rifles legal to everyone? That's an honest question that I ask myself.

Did you read the stats for Switzerland?

1. Do you hunt?
2. Define assault riffle.

Almost all modern guns are 'semi-automatic'. There is no real definition of an 'assault rifle' because there nothing really different about them from a hunting rifle.
Video I recently came across:

Here is a video that shows the features that were banned in the 1994 ban. It is a little dramatic but it gives a good overview of the 'assault rifle' issue.

Yes, I hunt. I would call an assault rifle a semi-automatic rifle that has a detachable mag.

If you hunt, many, many rifles are semi-auto for hunting.
A genuine assault weapon, as opposed to a legal (misleading) definition, is a hand-held, selective fire weapon, which means it's capable of firing in either an automatic or a semiautomatic mode depending on the position of a selector switch. These kinds of weapons are heavily regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934 and are further regulated in some states. Assault weapons are not the weapons of choice among drug dealers, gang members or criminals in general. Assault weapons are used in about one-fifth of one percent (.20%) of all violent crimes and about one percent in gun crimes.

Well I just kind of question things a bit. I've been hunting since I was a teen, and I have never used a semi-automatic gun of any sort to do so. I've toyed with the idea of getting a semi-automatic shotgun, but I haven't as of yet. I really appreciate the clarification on what an assault rifle is - honestly, I do - but I guess what I'm questioning the necessity of is the type of gun that I was mistakenly defining as an assault rifle. What is the need for an average Joe to have access to a semi-automatic rifle that has a detachable mag - particularly a high-capacity detachable mag?
I'm not trying to speak out against them as much as I am voicing doubts I'm starting to have in my mind.

So a Remington 7400 is an assault rifle? What about a Beneli R1? For the record if someone was to walk into a theatre I was in and do this I would prefer they have a semi auto rifle then a shot gun.

I would give you a relative "yes" to your questions about the 7400 and R1 being assault rifles. (Admittedly, I'm not sure if they are actually rifled, though.) I'm just struggling to really see why you need a gun that can hold so many rounds and shoot so many shots so quickly.
Don't take it the wrong way, I used to own a semi-auto AK and got a kick out of emptying a 30 round clip into a target every now and then...but as far as hunting, I'm yet to come across a situation where I've ever needed more than a couple three shots, maybe.

Both the 7400 and the R1 are semi auto high powered hunting rifles available in a varitey of calibers. The stock mag for both holds, I believe, 5 rounds.
