I already know your answer, because you would've been cool with them just offing the dude on the spot, but you're cool with them beating the dude?

    I agree with you.

Mental state people. He was beat, embarrassed, emasculated, and drug off the plane. Not to mention he is now an unwilling a public figure with all his dark past being revealed.

It is one of the worst abuses of authority I have ever seen in America.

I don't care what the "Law" is here. The Law is wrong and needs to change ASAP.

It is still an abuse by the authorities too.

In the real world, the cops/authorities don't have the power to forcibly get involved in civil/contractual disputes. The guy was non-violent and a paying customer.

All this is, is United being CHEAP, expecting customers to make up for United's mistakes (and yes not having a crew in place in Louisville is United's mistake), and United taking advantage of whatever rules are in place to randomly target individual passengers for Corporate Greed.

As someone who will only fly if I really have to this would provide essentially zero value to me. People keep acting like it's a great deal.

Why did they pick that guy to remove from the plane? Has that been answered? Why him and not anyone else?

I fly a ton and have enough frequent flier miles for my wife and I to fly to Jamaica for 15 bucks apiece and that $800 voucher wouldn't have been enough for me to give up my seat. $800 cash and it's a whole new ballgame.

Think they said the computer system runs some sort of algorithm based on factors like ticket cost and purchase date....

From just released video from the Daily Mail

The cop then says: 'Well… I have to drag you... You know how this is going to end up happening, right?'
Dao then replies: 'You can drag me, I'm not going. I'm staying right here. You'll have to drag me.'
The cop then says, 'I'm just telling you, it's going to be a lot harder for you...', before Dao interrupts with: 'Yes I know that, I'd rather go to jail.'
'You'd rather go to jail than just getting off,' the cop replies, while sounded confused at the comment.
    'Yes,' Dao is heard saying.
The two then continues speaking for a few more seconds, with Dr Dao mentioning he had flown to Chicago from Los Angeles and was desperate to get home, before the video cuts off.

    Makes sense.

There was never any doubt in my mind that the authorities told him numerous times what they would do if he failed to comply.

In short he is saying, I would rather go to jail than volunteer for this kind of abuse.

Ummm... he obviously didn't volunteer and we see what happened. But you are right, the word "abuse" is probably mild in this case, it was worse than that.

    From the article:

As he was being dragged off, other passengers appeared outraged. “Oh, my god,” a woman uttered. Fellow passenger Tyler Bridges took his phone out and filmed it, because filming things is now what everyone feels like they need to do to change the world. At a time when Syrian civilians are being gassed to death and beheaded, when North Koreans are being tortured in camps and Sudanese are starved in a war-caused famine, the video of an American being forcibly removed from a plane after refusing multiple requests “felt like something the world needed to see,” Bridges told the New York Times.
