    What an idiot, I'm wondering why it's second degree murder though? I guess it's because the guy came to him rather than the shooter setting out to kill the man?

    I believe you are correct but I think there is also a third option that sort of lies between those two..

    The first option like you said is if there is an opportunity to flee, they you have a duty to retreat. The other side is you can stand your ground regardless to whether that ground is your home, car, and maybe even if you are out in public and you are held up, there is not duty to retreat.

    The third option is stand your ground but only in your home, else where you have to flee is the opportunity is there. I believe it is called the Castle Doctrine.
