Police Rifle Left Unattended During NKY Domestic Incident

Lots of finger pointing going on between Dayton and Bellevue PDs. Dayton cops say the gun belongs to Bellevue PD. Bellevue cop says he handed his rifle over to a Dayton cop so he could approach the suspect and the Dayton cop left it leaning against the car. Either way, it's an incredible mistake that should never happen!

Police rifle left unattended outside during response to domestic - Cincinnati News, FOX19-WXIX TV

    DAYTON, KY (FOX19) -
After a domestic incident unfolded this week in northern Kentucky, a resident took a picture of a rifle leaning up against a nearby car and uploaded it to Facebook.

He also posted a video from the scene, during which he claims the rifle is unattended. Pictures within the link. I couldn't get any to upload here.

Question, why are they going in with assault rifles for a minor domestic situation?

There is nothing minor about a domestic situation where you have a guy with multiple weapons who has possibly already discharged his gun into the air.

A man had already fired a gun...that's a "Minor Domestic Situation?"

Over One-Fifth of Officers killed in the Line of Duty are killed at Domestic calls (By far the deadliest calls). When a gun is involved it is smarter to use the rifle and stay further away than approach them with just a handgun...officers will choose rifle every time if they have time to decide.

As for the rifle being left, someone is going to get disciplined for that.

Interesting, on the tv (Fox 19) this morning they said it was a minor domestic situation, never mentioned anything about weapons or shots in the air.

Dayton Cop should be fire IMO, thats a no no you just cant do. Bellevue cop probably should get a reprimand as well (not fired though) he is ultimately responsible for his weapon.

It does, didnt anticipate the news article being different from the broadcast they had of the event on TV, but its the media, so I should have questioned it.

Ask any cop. No such thing as a "minor" domestic situation. Don't think anyone's gonna get fired but, there should be some time off without pay. You are taught from day one to protect that weapon. Loose your weapon, you'll loose your life. It is that serious.

Situation reeks of 1) lack of discipline and 2) lack of weapon management protocols. Both departments bear some culpability in the event.

Training days should take care of future issues....

    Excellent post BirdBrain.

When I see stuff like this it normally boils down to a lack of training/teamwork.

The Bellevue Police Officer definitely needs to be disciplined if it was in fact his rifle. Handing it to anyone else from another Police Agency is not proper protocol. It also sounds like the Bellevue Police Officer may deserve a commendation for diffusing a serious incident but there is not enough information to know for sure.

On the Dayton Police Officer, if the story is correct, and you were handed the rifle, you made an egregious error and I would strongly consider terminating you.
