    I found this:

    (1) A person is guilty of assault in the second degree when:
    (a) He intentionally causes serious physical injury to another person; or
    (b) He intentionally causes physical injury to another person by means of a
deadly weapon or a dangerous instrument; or
    (c) He wantonly causes serious physical injury to another person by means
of a deadly weapon or a dangerous instrument.

I would imagine that's the key to whether it's 2nd or 4th degree.

How badly injured or, as the KRS states, a deadly weapon was used.

I don't see how one or two punches could cause that amount of injury, unless something was used, ie: bat, brick, rock, etc.

I heard the same thing that Clyde did. The initial punch put him on the ground and then the shortstop just kept hitting him.

It's when you get into that second punch that charges start escalating.

Lot easier for officials and coaches to bust that stuff up when guys have to run a 50-yard dash just to get in the middle of it.

And they are waiting to see if the KHSSA is going to suspend him? He shouldn't be allowed back on the team, the school should make that clear right now. The kid clearly has issues that he needs to worry about, not about a sport.

I'm not trying to beat up on the PCC kid. I do have to note that it's usually around this time the posts start coming in about "maybe the worst thing to do to this kid is remove him from the team structure." Granted, it usually comes up most in the football forums on BGP, but this is just as good a place as any.

Then those people have no clue what they are talking about .

People want to complain about sports fights, fights in the stands, fights between a team member(s) and or coach and an official, fans fighting with officials. If they (Schools and the KHSAA) don't play hard ball, this nonsense will never stop. And this kid? I don't care what the excuse is, he flat out punch the other kid, no excuse, and it's on video.

If all he got was a black eye or a busted lip, I don't see how it is second degree. Just MHO.

If what Clyde said happened, and he knocked him out on the first punch, I could see second degree. Beyond that, not so sure.

Sorry, but I don't think a harsh, mandated punishment would have altered the kids thinking. I'm not saying there shouldn't be any punishment or consequences. But I just don't believe punishment is a great deterrent. People knowingly break laws every day and are fully aware there will be consequences if caught. basically, my point is no matter what the KHSAA decides, or enacts, we will never be able to completely get rid of this sort of behavior.
