Default Penn State to get NCAA sanctions

I do not see a thread about this for this point in time.

Joe Paterno's statute came down yesterday.

    Today the NCAA announces sanctions.

Here is my take. Those involved who are still in official positions are trying to dump everything they can on Paterno.

I got to listen to a lot of commentary on XM on a long drive after the Louis Freeh report came out. The item that most incensed me was the long lost email where the indicated Curly and Schultz had dropped their efforts 'after talking it over with Joe' (that may not be exact quote).

Paterno may not have done all he could have and maybe he did not want to know the facts. But others had a duty to act and it appears they did not and then went on with a cover-up that last for years. Paterno has been getting dragged through the mud the last few weeks. Some if it seems to be an attempt to lay it all his graveside and keep others from facing responsibility.

On some level I agree. But I still contend you are ignoring Paterno's stature with the University if you do not think he was the ring leader. The guy ran the University and had absolute power.

Yes, I think the statute had to come down. I just think they are playing up 'absolute power' angle to give cover to those who failed to do their legal and fiduciary responsibilities. I had heard before the Freeh report that many in Penn State had quite associating with the program after 1991 due to the understanding that there was a cover-up underway. The failure to act seems more wide-spread than just Paterno. Maybe this is why the NCAA is acting.

And he was the head of the cover-up. I agree many more are culpable, and they will receive their punishment in due-time. Remember, Paterno is the same guy that kicked out the President of the University before when they were coming to fire him because he did not want to be fired. If that is not power, I do not know what is.

    stature, not statue.

As Bugatti mentioned, Paterno was the ring leader, and he ran the university, and had absolute power, to cross him would be like being in the mob and crossing the godfather. Paterno could have done something and people would have listened, but he was more worried about how it would hurt the football program. Heck, he they could have at least told Sandusky to take a hike and stay away from the football program.
