Newport gives football coach a second chance after his 215 arrest

NEWPORT – Kelly Middleton knew that his school district’s choice of football coach would raise some eyebrows.

In the eyes of the Newport Independent school district and Middleton, its superintendent, Matt Schmitz has earned a second chance. And they gave him one, hiring Schmitz as its head football coach this week.

Schmitz had the same job for two seasons from 2013-14, and was athletic director during the latter part of that tenure. He eventually left those jobs after an arrest in May, 2015 when he was arrested in Newport for marijuana possession, resisting arrest and public intoxication. Middleton was also superintendent at that time and suspended him then.

“I knew it might be a bad headline, but I decided I’d take the risk and give him a chance,” Middleton said. “He’ll be under some scrutiny. I think that when someone is trying to get better, they should get a chance. I don’t know how long you have to answer for a mistake. It seems to me he’ll appreciate the job even more. We need him and I think he needs us. I think he’ll be a good fit.”

Schmitz was rehired by the district last summer for its New Pathways program, a teaching position that helps at-risk children and has 10 students in it. He applied for the football position when Tim Viox stepped down recently after three seasons. A four-person committee led by Newport High School principal Kyle Niederman unanimously voted him in.

I was assuming he is also a teacher as I thought someone posted that he had been hired back as a teacher previously. But either way, I am with those who think that a HC has more influence than a teacher. It would be limited to those who play the sport, but it goes deep.

Well, past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior.

Schmitz was arrested today for DUI and resigns from Newport coaching job.

This is sad but it was predictable.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. In this case, it didn’t work out so well. I still give Newport credit for giving a guy a chance. Had it worked out, it would have been a great story, and a great example of how people can turn their lives around. People can really change. Instead, at least they found out early and had someone in place that could take over.

It's not hard to not do drugs, you simply don't. With that being said I prefer my teachers and coaches and mentors to be drug free. ( at least as far as I know )

I really believe that (the bolded statement). I hoped it would happen in this case. But when he was rehired I thought it was too soon. He needed more time to prove to himself and to others that he had recovered.

This makes Newport look really bad. I do hope the guy gets it together though.

It is a shame, but I applaud that he got his second chance.

From someone outside the NKY area you are probably right it looks bad. Those inside the area, that know Newport, it doesnt. They made a decision on a coach based on a very small applicant pool. It didnt work, look forward and keep moving.

You don't believe in second chances?

I completely agree. If this had worked out everyone would have applauded and it would have been a great story. As it, it didn't work out, and really, I don't think it's Newport that looks bad. The only one that looks bad in this situation is Schmitz.

I do in most cases. I grew up in that community, lived within 1,000 feet of the school itself, and I've been a teacher and coach since 2006. One of the basic principles of being a teacher and coach is you better not do drugs or get arrested. If you do, you're done.

I've never understood what makes a grown man, who has a good job, that is highly educated, reasonably successful, and a bright future decide to do drugs and get arrested. What makes him get drunk at a bar and stagger around the area?

It demonstrates a complete lack of judgement and if the Newport officials couldn't see this, then it does make them look bad.

I care deeply for my northern campbell county people, I get frustrated when I see some of them act the same way now that we did back in 1996 when we all were kids running the streets.

I do not know Coach Schmitz or where he came from, but people like him should know better. I do hope he is able to figure things out and have a successful and healthy life.
