JCPS Teacher, Mr. Kentucky Chess Found Dead After Being Stabbed 140 Times Last Month

This is a peculiar story in my opinion

    Initial article:

"As world chess champion Garry Kasparov's designated greeter at the National High School chess championship in Lexington one year, Steve Dillard walked in with the famed Russian to a standing ovation.

"Garry turned to me and said, 'Mr. Dillard, I didn't realize you were so famous,'" Dillard later recalled, upon his election to the Kentucky Chess Hall of Fame.

The crowd was cheering for Kasparov, of course, but to Kentucky chess players, Dillard also was a true champion.

The Jefferson County math teacher introduced chess into some of Jefferson County's most beleaguered public schools, bought thousands of chess sets for Kentuckians who couldn't afford them, and last year was given the U.S. Chess Association's life achievement award for directing more tournaments 3,000 than any American.

Dillard, 55, who also fostered troubled children, was found beaten and stabbed to death Friday in his Jeffersontown home, and police charged one of his former foster kids with murder.

Ronshai Jenefor, 21, was being held in Jefferson County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond. He was found about a half-mile from Dillard's home walking in the rain, drenched and with blood on his hands, according to Jeffersontown police.

Dillard's body was found at about 11 a.m. by his sister, police said.

Jefferson County deputy coroner Rita Taylor confirmed Dillard's identity on Saturday but his death was announced by the Kentucky Chess Association on its website and confirmed by its officers, including vice president Ryan Velez.

Dillard was supposed to attend a scholastic chess championship Saturday in Lexington; instead, about 1,000 people were mourning his death, Velez said.

"He was the biggest single promoter of chess in the country and that's a fact," Velez said. "You can't find a single chess person in Kentucky he hasn't helped."

Dillard, known as "Mr. Kentucky Chess," learned the game from his father as an 8-year-old and was introduced to tournament chess as a student at Atherton High School, according to a biography that accompanied his election into the Kentucky Chess Hall of Fame.

He began promoting chess in the schools in 1982 as a math teacher at Western High School, and eventually directed tournaments in Kentucky and 30 other states. He helped grow the state chess association from 300 members to more than 5,000, according to his Hall of Fame nomination.

In 2001 he told The Courier-Journal that he saw chess as "a great equalizer."

"Inner-city schools have a poor reputation sometimes, but their students are tremendous when you see them at the chess board," he said. "They tend to be confident and stronger academically. No one will look at the color of their skin or the type of clothes they are wearing, because winning at chess, on equal ground, is something that can't be taken away."

He taught as many as six credit courses in chess a day at Kammerer Middle School, where he also was a math teacher. He had transferred a little more than a week ago to Carrithers Middle School, said Principal Marcella Denise Franklin-Williams.

Dillard was single and never married, Velez said.

Dillard paid for thousands of national chess club memberships for children to compete in sanctioned tournaments, and was just as dedicated to his foster children, many of whom were deeply troubled, Velez said.

"He never looked at a rap sheet as a reason not to help someone," Velez said.

Eric Yussman, who has written about the history of chess in Louisville and was a friend, said, "Steve was the kindest, gentlest person I've ever known."

Here is new information coming out today:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- "Investigators say a Jeffersontown teacher who was found dead in his home was stabbed more than 100 times.

The victim, 55-year-old Steve Dillard, was found at his Jeffersontown home by his sister back in March. Ronshai Jenefor, age 21, is charged with his murder.

On Wednesday, WDRB obtained new information surrounding Dillard's death. According to a state police report, Jenefor admitted to the murder when he was questioned near the scene.

When asked why he did it, officers say Jenefor said Dillard molested him.

Dillard was known for running a foster home for at-risk youth. Police say Jenefor was living with him at the time.

Jenefor's own family was in court today and said they were there to support him.

"People are making it seem like my nephew is just a monster and he's really not," said Mary Jenefor, the suspect's aunt. "You know, he went to prom. He graduated from high school, he was on his way to college. He got sick. He's mentally ill, and no one is putting that out there."

But, she added, they felt sorrow for Dillard's family as well.
"Steve Dillard, he was a part of our family too," she said. "He was a good family friend to us."

"We went to the wake -- the funeral," she added. "And we were treated like family at his funeral, and I just want to let the family know, sorry that this happened. We are very sorry that this happened."

She added that she saw no evidence of any molestation.

"Nothing that I know of, no," she said. "Steve was always good to us. But like I said, no one knows what happened that day. It's just sad all the way around."

    New information

The newly added discovery sheds additional light on the case.

According to a police report, officers were called to Dillard's home on Thelma Lane just before 11 a.m. on Friday, March 13, after his sister found his body inside the home.

"The body was lying face up and was covered with a sheet," police say. "There appeared to be puncture marks on the body and a large area of carpet that was discolored from what I believed was from pooling of blood."

Police say they were given the description of Jenefor, who is described in the report as Dillard's roommate. They found a person matching the description of Jenefor walking on Six Mile Lane, near Pine Lake Drive, nearby.

An officer stopped that person, who turned out to be Jenefor himself, and asked if he could speak with him. Jenefor said, "OK," according to the report. Police say he had blood on his right hand, around his fingers and nails.

Police began to question Jenefor. When he was asked if he knew Dillard, Jenefor allegedly told officers, "He died."

"I asked him, 'What happened?'" the officer writing the report stated. "Ronshai Jenefor stated, 'I stabbed him and killed him.'"

When police asked Jenefor why, he allegedly replied, "Because he was molesting me."

The officer asked, "Was Mr. Dillard molesting you at the time you stabbed him?"

According to the report, Jenefor said, "No."

"I asked Ronshai if Mr. Dillard was hurting him or if he was in any danger when he killed Mr. Dillard," the officer stated in the report. "Ronshai stated 'no'."

"I asked Ronshai if Mr. Dillard was hurting him or if he was in any danger when he killed Mr. Dillard," the officer stated in the report. "Ronshai stated 'no'."

Jenefor was taken to the Jeffersontown Police Department and put into an interview room. Police say he repeated his admission that he stabbed and killed Dillard.

According to an autopsy report, Dillard was stabbed 140 times.

    Jenefor is charged with murder.

So sad that something like this happened to someone that appears to have done so much for so many others. I really hope there is not more to this story.

I just want to be clear. Are you guys just taking the murder's word for it? That he was molested without any supporting evidence?

No I am just saying that if the foster care parent did (Dillard), then it would change the story....

Why would it change the story, he was still murdered? Are you implying that if he was molested it would justify stabbing a man 140 times? If he was molested why not report it?

Novel idea, maybe the killer is making it up. Until evidence shows otherwise I'll take the word of a killer with a HUGE grain of salt.

I'm sorry to say but molestation seems to be one crime that once your accused you're guilty until proven innocent.

Wow, this one is tough to figure. The whole unmarried, foster thing raises a red flag. Sorry, but it does. Then again, are there any other foster kids with a similar story? How mentally disturbed was the kid and was it diagnosed? Or just the aunt's version of her diagnosis? Without evidence of any sexual misconduct, how will this kid and his attorney prove it or did I miss a key piece along the way?

I am not saying it is justifiable to stab a person 140 times, but if (and a big if) he did molest the kid and there is evidence, we could see the reason he stabbed a person 140 times. That is not normal behavior obviously.

If a man molested my child, I sure could justify stabbing him 140 times. And If I couldn't justify it, I wouldn't care.

It could be a few things.

    1. A single guy that devotes himself to underprivileged children is a wonderful selfless thing. 21 is prime time for first break schizophrenia. He could be a tragic victim to a delusional mentally ill man.
    2. A pedophile figures out that helping out underprivileged children provides him with the perfect victims. He molests the wrong one.
    3. A combination of being mentally ill and a victim of a pedophile.

If he kills him by stabbing him1 time or 140 does it really matter?

I've seen so many that were abused and suppressed it until later in life. If he was actually molested he may have known that with this guys stellar reputation no one would believe him. Or he may have went to confront him and it went sideways...who knows.

I'm with Doc this whole thing smells funny.
