    False Ballistic Missile Warning

Hawaii missile alert: How one employee ‘pushed the wrong button’ and caused a wave of panic - The Washington Post

Falsely pushing the ballistic missile warning button has to be one of the worst ways to start your weekend. Should jail time be involved for the pusher?

Can only imagine the wide-spread panic this caused. I think jail time is more than appropriate in this instance, and hope it happens.

Heard on the radio that the guy that pushed it has been "reassigned".

Jail time for clicking the wrong drop down box?

Maybe if it's proven it was intentional, you fire the person. No way you jail them for accidentally clicking the wrong box.

The whole thing seems fishy to me. I know they’ve conveyed it was an operator error type thing like you describe, but one would think it would be a little more difficult to set off a state wide alert than “clicking the wrong box.” Heck, you close down Word it asks “are you sure you want to close Word without saving your document?” Seems normal to me a prompt would come up saying, “Are you sure a missile is on its way to Hawaii that will lead to a war?”

Maybe there really was a missile headed toward Hawaii and it was eliminated before it got there?

I've seen this hinted at elsewhere...

I agree with you on this. There have to be multiple layers on protocol to send out that warning. The chance for error seems very small to me. My gut tells me this wasn’t an accident.

Well if it actually happened that has to be the first 100 guesses...if it was anyone else IMO it would be much scarier.

If there really was a missile headed for Hawaii, there would already be a country under fire.

I fully believe that the guy with a bad hair cut and a Napoleon complex really is that dumb.

Yeah, I'd assume they'd try covert operations to eliminate the threat first.

I don't think we could secretly attack a country. We would know.
