Alcohol votes in Marshall County and Murray on 7-17-12
Tomorrow voters across Marshall County and in Murray, KY go to the polls to decide if packaged liquor sales shall be allowed county and city wide, respectively. I get a kick out of hearing from both sides, with the Vote No crowd obviously being the most vocal.
Marshall County is a different place. Heck, the people from there would acknowledge that. VERY conservative community to say the least. "The County" is flooded with Vote No signs. What really rallied the base was a recent car accident that has left a girl in a coma when she was hit by a drunk driver... at least that is what the initial police report made you believe. The accused was vilified, around the area collections were being taken by the victim (still are) since she was hit by a drunk driver. Well, the toxicology report came back that the guy had no alcohol in his system. That makes for a great thread in itself, but I digress. The point is it really ratcheted up outcries from both sides.
Murray is a lot more progressive of a community with the University. You honestly have not heard much about it until the past couple of weeks. I do not have a sense of how the vote will go. Some propaganda from both sides with church's involvement for the NO vote (do not get me started on that one), but in all you have not heard a whole lot.
If I were to guess I would say both will fail. The Murray vote being closer. When it got pushed to the summer time it hurt the YES's cause with not as many from college voting.

Most of the college kids are not registered to vote in Murray but their hometown county.
There has been a lot of letters to the editor in The Paducah sun the past month especially the past week.
I don't see it passing in Marshall county.

I always find it ironic in these votes - or any election - that on election day establishments are not allowed to serve alcohol until the polls close.

I had read some reports that the Marshall Co debate was getting pretty heated. Other than Paducah is there anywhere in WKY (east of Christain Co) that you can buy package booze? I know there are a few counties that are moist now but none I can think of that are full wet.

As a person who has visited Murray State University and the City of Murray many, many times over the last couple of years, I can't seem to understand what the big deal is! I mean Paris, Tenn is what, 13 miles south from Murray and you can buy it their and bring it back, so why not keep the dollars in Kentucky because the College students are going to go to Paris if they can't but it in Murray and there is no way you can stop them or anyone from doing so.
Just doesn't make any sense to me!

The expression in Murray has always been to "Go Down South" to purchase your booze. That meant the short drive to Tennessee first passing by Mac's in Puryear, TN. Takes about 10 minutes to get there and ole Mac charges an added premium to his beer because of it. It is a joke. The next stop on the beer trail is on the back side of Puryear at the Kwik Mart to purchase beer. Adds another 5-7 minutes but the beer is cheaper. If you want hard alcohol you drive on further south to Paris. One can take Whitlock Road off 641 for a shortcut. It always made drinking an experience in college, but I would guess the majority of Mac's business is from Murray (or Calloway County).

I still find the taboo nature of alcohol in America as one of the great oddities. We make such a big deal out of drinking where-in other countries it is just not that huge of an issue.

Check out this wiki page and map. Appears KY has the most dry counties by a mile.
