UL hires Graduate Assistant Petrino Jr as new WR coach

Anyone surprised? I didn't know the job opening had even been posted long enough to make a hire.

Petrino was already on staff last year, and he was coaching the WR's mostly.

    Hence Lamar Thomas.

Understood. Does that mean that the job opening does not have to be posted? I'll admit, I am ignorant in how that works, I was just curious so I can get a better understanding on the process.

As for the other part of my question, are any of you UL fans surprised that the hire/promotion was made so quickly? Is it a good hire/promotion, or should they have extended an offer to candidates that were not already part of the program?

Again, I really don't know anything about Petrino Jr other than he played for Trinity and he is UL's coaches son. So basically, is this a good hire in the UL fans opinions?

No idea on whether or not the job would have to be posted. I'm sure you don't HAVE to have a receivers coach, so I'm not sure how any hiring process would have to work.

If I had to guess this move has been in the making for a while or Lamar Thomas wouldn't have "left."

I don't really put a whole lot of stock into position coaches. Lamar Thomas was a good recruiter, but I think we have other guys on staff that can (and already have) proven they can pick up the slack. We have a TON of talent at the WR position. I think Petrino will do just fine.

Do you think Petrino forced Lamar out so he could promote his son? I had never heard any of the UL fans complain about Lamar and he is supposedly a great recruiter. It's a serious question, not a jab at UL, as I was surprised that Lamar popped up out of nowhere and was hired by UK.

But now that Petrino's son was promoted to that position it did pop up another question mark in my head. It makes me wonder if Petrino Jr is just an exceptional graduate assistant, or whether Lamar isn't as good as people think, or is Petrino just promoting his family name. I can't decide, but it is a bit odd, imo.

Clearly young Petrino was ready and wanted the job, blood is thicker than water. Simple as that.
