    Good hire for Texas.

Just dont believe it is a job Smart should have taken. If I remember correctly better basketball jobs came calling and he turned them down. Now he is going to Texas? Dont make sense to me.

I know he's turned some down, but can't remember what jobs he has turned down before.

He turned down UCLA a couple years ago. That's a much better basketball job IMO.

This is 2nd hand info from a national college basketball journalist that most of you know of and probably follow, but here was his take to me in a text: Shaka knows / knew that he had a great situation at VCU, a laid-back Richmond media that didn't bug him, and an iconic status with alums and boosters (and sponsors) so that they didn't sweat him to do a lot of stuff. However, he realized that if stayed too much longer (without tourney success), his time would pass, so he chased the biggest bag of money this offseason that he could.

Again, take it for what it is worth.

But if he does well at Texas he'll have his pick of jobs in the future. Had he went immediately to a school like UCLA and failed, he be on the scrap heap with no chance to get back to the top.

And if he fails at Texas, he's on the scrap heap as well.

...but he is filthy rich and will find a job in a middle-tier conference in 10 seconds....

Agreed. But it didn't take Rick Barnes long to get a decent job. Compare that to where guys like Steve Lavin, Matt Doherty, and Billy Gillispie ended up.

Barnes went in 2003 when Syracuse beat them and then beat Kansas for the championship.

Cheered HARD for that Texas team in the national semifinals. Did not like Syracuse (and still don't ) and was all about TJ Ford. He was incredible that season.

Not true. TJ Ford carried him to a Final Four.

I dont disagree with anything everyone is sayin. I like Smart and think he can get it done at Texas and the Big 12. I have never thought the Big 12 was that tough a league.
