Nope...schools have final say. The new UK for example is part of re branding the entire university not just athletics. I'd guess several new wildcats were reviewed and this is what they settled on.

I think this was done to get one set mascot logo. Currently there are several being used and none lend themselves to being on uniforms. Either to busy of a design or too random. This simple logo for better or worse will make people think of UK when they see it in a few years.

That said, I'm not a fan but I don't gate it either.

Are they changing the mascot to the saber tooth tigers?

UK needs a logo that can be embroidered on small patches or from of hats, be visible as a helmet decal or even full chest screen print. This works, it's a little different and I think that is why UK is slowly rolling it out. Gives people a chance to get used to seeing it. It's not that bad, would look good as a decal even over sized like that huge Boise State horse head. part of our fan base will never like it because they want nothing to change ever, but they aren't the target market anyway. It's to impress recruits/ players, and sell merchandise - to the people that actually buy merchandise. Not the lower lever Rupp sitting old guy still wearing his power K hat from 1980 to every game.
It could be worse, it's simple and clean not the hideous stuff that Oregon wears, or worse that Maryland has.

Remember the old controversy with the tongue on the Wildcat that resembled a penis? For some reason, UK seems to have trouble with logos and sexual innuendo.

I have a good friend that was a salesman for a large T-Shirt company back then. He said they almost went broke because many retailers forced them to take shirts back once this story broke. Said that even though this was a UK design, his boss was actually accused of making the tongue like that on purpose by some...since they were the number one seller of UK shirts at the time.

I had one. Had I known they'd be collectors items, now, I would have preserved it instead of wearing it until faded and thread bare.

I'm not really a fan and don't plan on purchasing anything with that logo either.

No one at the Super Bowl party that I was at last night liked it.
