What are your favorite westerns?
Top Five:
5) The Outlaw Josey Wales In my opinion, Eastwood gives one of his most versatile outlaw performances in Josey Wales, supported by a comical & poignant performance by Chief Dan George.
4) Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid This is among the most classic of antihero movies, set to a western backdrop. Some of Newman & Redford's best work.
3) The Magnificent Seven A great re-telling of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai - one of film's most classic plot lines. Great characters, great performaces, great action.
2) Unforgiven This movie almost single-handedly brought back the western genre in 1992. The story twists the classic western themes of glorified violence, robbery and vice and puts them in a light where their ugly truths stand out.
1) The Wild Bunch Sam Peckinpah at his best. This may be even more "classic" than The Magnificent Seven. This movie shows the struggle of classic "old west" bad boys as they fight to survive in the onset of the 20th century.
Also worth mentioning: Jeremiah Johnson wasn't exactly a "western" in the truest of senses, but is still one of my favorite western style movies. Additionally, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and The Proposition are both well worth watching if you appreciate the genre.

Great list. I would add The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and High Plains Drifter.

Not sure if it totally meets the criteria of a "western" but I like Jeremiah Johnson.
Fist full of Dollars is another fave of mine.

Unforgiven is my favorite. I also really like The Outlaw Josey Wales, True Grit, and The Searchers. The whole "Man With No Name" trilogy is excellent as well.

Any thoughts on the 3:10 To Yuma remake from a couple years back? I've got to admit, I'm yet to see the original, but I thought it was pretty solid overall.
