Default Sheriff's deputy flips wig, kills six

CRANDON, Wisconsin (CNN) -- An off-duty sheriff's deputy used a police-style AR-15 rifle to kill six people at an early morning party in a small Wisconsin town, officials said Monday.

Tyler Peterson, a sheriff's deputy, shot and killed six people, police said.

1 of 3 Twenty-year-old Tyler Peterson had gone to the party early Sunday to make amends with his ex-girlfriend, a friend of Peterson's told The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Going to be more of a problem in the future with small town police.

In no way shape or form should a 19, 20, or 21 year old be a officer.

Does anyone else find it odd that Rocket started this thread considering it contains ex-girlfriend issues? I also agree with the age deal for potential officers. Needs to be reformed somehow.

A guy I worked with drove through there late last week coming back from a hunting trip. He hadn't heard about the shooting.

Read in today's paper than not only was the deputy 20 years old, but also that Wisconsin is one of just a few states that do not require some sort of psychological eval before joining the force.

He supposenly went to the pizza party to try to patch things up with his former girlfriend. They argued, and some of the others at the party shouted insults at him, according to an article in the Lexington H-L today. One said he was a "worthless pig". He snapped and killed most of them. Very sad situation.

Do you think if he wasn't a police officer this wouldn't have happened. Him being a young police officer had nothing to do with the shooting. Some of the best police officers I've ever met started while they were twenty-one. I started my carreer at twenty-two. I am now retired. The truth is this guy just had a screw loose. I pray for the families of those who were killed, but don't blame it on his youth or being a police officer.

SO avg. citizens have a AR-15 in the car? From what I have read he bought using his law enforcement status.

You played a major factor, as the girl was 16-18 and if he couldn't take being called a pig, then he didn't need to be a cop.

His job was not what made him do what he did.

The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed?

I don't think you can narrow this type of heinous action down to one specific thing. I think it was a combination of his youth/immaturity, position of authority and mental instability that caused him to do this.

They can't be cops at 20 or 21 but we can see 18 year old high school kids to the front line in Iraq?

I know people who carry AR's or some kind of tactical shotguns in their cars at all time. His was police style, the only difference is it probably was auto. Even if it wasn't auto, he would have done the same exact amount of damage.

I'm going to take for granted you meant to say, Youth played a major factor. Being I was nowhere near the events of that morning. And your answer is Yes. Average citizens do have AR-15's. I agree he shouldn't have been an cop, as you put it. But this has noting to do with the shooting. He would have done the same thing if he were a shoe salesman, or drove a delivery van. He was a nut.

I'm pretty shocked this happened. My Mom is from Laona, WI, which is very near Crandon WI. This is a very unpopulated area. I can't believe this guy was not 21 yrs old, but was a F/T deputy for the county and also a P/T police officer for Crandon. My Uncle and cousin's still live here.
