And you obviously haven't read any of my posts in this thread either. Did not say the Black Keys were "not rock", I referred to them as Indie Rock. There are thousands of bands out there who are technically rock music but IMO plain ole stripped down back ro the basics of mixing blues and country western to get rock and roll music went out when the Stripes did, sorry for having a different opinion. And yes, yes I know Jack was very experimental and encorporated a lot of effects and synthesizers to his guitar tones but to me they were still rock and roll. I can't use the Black Keys or any other band out there right now as a big enough example of just simply being a rock band, as I have said they all fall under diferent categories. And yes I know the Stripes can be put into other categories as well (indie rock, garage rock, etc.) but to me they were rock.
Rock'n'roll is rock'n'roll, regardless if it has a genre tag on the front of it.

But at the end of the day I don't really buy into the "pure" rock thing. A lot of people probably consider Creed and Nickelback to be the logical extension of rock music today. But just because they play a bunch of power chords and get a ton of airtime doesn't mean they aren't garbage.
A lot of people would consider that type of garbage rock but it is really more less Pop rock, top 40 rock, contemporary rock, or what have you. Again most people would classify a lot of things as simply rock but outside the realm of casual music listeners, real music fanatics know the difference.

Right but I think most of you guys are missing what I have been trying to say and part of that could be my fault, I don't know. I've tried to paint this picture from the thoughts in my head and obviously it just isn't coming from the text and into other peoples heads the way I envision it.
What I am saying is what band out there right now can you look at and say now that is rock? AC/DC (and I bring them up not out of like or dislike but just as an example) for example, now that is rock. In the 90's Nirvana brought rock back after everything got glammed up. Many bands throughout history have held the torch as being a great "rock" band. The Who comes to mind for the late 60's-early 70's. To me the Stripes were the last band out there (in my opinion) that is good enough and powerful enough for people to say, "man, now thats a rock band. That right there is rock." Weezer I guess is another example of what I would call rock. No extravagent solo's or anything just straight up rock.
Basically all I'm trying to say. I understand not everybody is going to feel the same way but don't criticize my musical knowledge and act like I don't know music.

The problem with me is that you dismiss the Black Keys as being rock because they are as you call it "Indie Rock" (I'd argue blues-rock but that's another thread). But, on the same hand you use Nirvana and the White Stripes as your examples as to what is rock. Both Nirvana and the White Stripes are classic examples of bands who were the figureheads of movements within rock, i.e. Grunge and Garage Rock (such as your assertion that the Black Keys are Indie Rock). So to me the logic doesn't match. Because to dismiss the Black Keys as "Indie Rock" but at the same time champion the White Stripes as the last great "pure rock" band leads me to my above statement. If you simply don't like the Black Keys that's fine (though you are missing out) but to dismiss them for your reasons leaves me wondering.
As an aside, I'm with Jim --- Rock is Rock with both the Black Keys and the White Stripes being awesome rock bands.

I agree both are. Maybe I sold the Keys shorter than I should have but to me they're still not on that level yet, they have the potential to carry the torch for rock but I am going to wait and see what happens. To me they have almost become a "fad band" or something that has blew up and got way popular now as compared to when they first came out. I have kept up with the Keys for a while and their growth in fanbase in recognition has just been unbelievable. I guess since there are so many bandwagon fans of the Keys it has caused me to feel a different way towards them, kind of like Mumford and Sons. Guys who have been around for a while but just now achieving a certain level of success, its almost like they have came out of no where and blew up although they have actually both been around for a long time.

Interesting you would mention that -- one of my old-school best friends was telling me the other day that he is chaperoning his daughter (HS junior) and her boyfriend along with boyfriend's momma for a Black Keys concert somewhere -- either March 2 in Cincy or March 16 in Indy -- and he was asking me about them. I told him he might enjoy them more than his daughter (he loves blues and blues rock like I do), but it did give me pause in terms of wondering about why in the Sam Hill a junior in HS would be into something I was. That almost never happens. I've heard their music for a long time and been a fan, but never bought an album until a couple weeks ago, however, I am hooked.

Yeah great band, don't get me wrong. I have liked their stuff for a while but it's just the overkill of love/attention and bandwagon fans that have caused me to not be into them as much.
