Spend the weekend in Louisville. Louisville slugger museum, Mega cavern zip line tours and the Zoo.

Breaks Interstate Park (State Park owned and managed by Kentucky AND Virginia.)
Clifty Falls State Park (Great "casual hiking" park just outside of Madison, IN - just across the Ohio River from Carrolton, KY)
Mammoth Cave is fantastic...
Heuston Woods (Go stay in a yurt). It's close enough to Cincy that the Reds game is an option.
The Glier's Goetta Fest is also this weekend on the Newport Riverfront. Just figured I'd mention that...

Thinking of a Reds weekend maybe, isn't Friday fire works night? Top two teams in NL Reds and Pirates...
Kids age 11 and 20.....if they like coasters, Kings Island is a good time. Nice expanded waterpark too. But will agree that Holiday World waterpark trumps KI waterpark. But KI wins in the coasters division.

Great town. Went for a festival and really enjoyed it.

For my money...I'd take Clifty Falls across the river in Indiana. General Butler is nice, for sure - I've been many many times. I'd take the hiking trails from Clifty Falls over what they offer at General Butler though, easily. Plus it's about the same distance from Madison, IN - just on the Indiana side of things.

Obviously missing the point that you have an "inside source".

Yeah, we love it down there...but 11 year olds and Nashville after dark don't mix...and face it if your not going for after dark, not a lot a reason to go...

Clifty Falls in not across the Ohio River from Carrollton. You would travel west from Carrollton, though Milton, KY, then to Madison, IN, where Clifty Falls in located.

You're right...I was generalizing a bit. Probably 15 or 20 miles from downtown Carrollton, you think?

Didn't want to assume.
Jumper_dad I'd follow up with RM on this. That place is great. And something for all.

And home to Hinkles, which won a hamburger competition. You can take a quick trip up to Hanover College and hike its trails.
I say just go to the Gorge and get a cabin.

Thanks for all of the great ideas...really like to do French Lick, but without the kids!!! Setting that aside for anniversary in March.
Holiday World and Stone Mt Georgia at the top of our current list...btw if we go to SMG, I get a side trip to the Varsity in downtown Atlanta.

Ended up going to Atlanta and Stone Mt. Got a side trip in to The Varsity on Friday and stopped at The Cheescake Factory in Dunwoody Ga on the way home.
Stone Mt very family friendly, several family reunions going on this weekend according to the matching t-shirts worn by several groups. Laser and Fireworks show was pretty good, but the highlight was actually going to the top of Stone Mt and having the Atlanta skyline as a backdrop. For those of you that enjoy hiking, you can hike to the top. About 1 and 1/2 miles with an elevation change of about 900ft...I took the skylift!!!

It has been awhile since I have had a chili dog and some onion rings from The Varsity. I need to get back to Atlanta.
