    Default Middle School Basketball

Now that middle school football is over. Who are the top middle school teams around this year? Will Okerman's 8th grade lose a game this year? I heard RA Jones has over 70 6th graders trying out, that is insane. How many 6th graders are trying out for Okerman and Grey, they had good numbers in the past.

Campbell County will be fielding two teams again. For a school that size, I think it is a very good thing. But, different than before, there will be a true A and B team in each grade. The A team will play in the league and the B team will play in a less competitive environment where they can be successful also.

Tryouts are next week. The Camels should be strong in all 3 grades.

Ockerman 8th grade will NOT lose a game this year. Stanley is the best player in the middle school level in NKY. Most any other school system would have him playing at the frosh level this year.

Did the 7th grade get some new kids? I know 2 starters from last year are going to different schools.

A couple of the 6th grade Gold kids from last year have really developed. Add that with the returning players and the Camels 7th will be a good team. They may not win the championship but with Coach Davie they will compete with everyone.

I believe most of the local teams will be competing in the Camel Classic on 11/20-21. That should start to show who some of the better teams are.

They have the opportunity to be very good with their length and athleticism.

In the Eastern part of the state Virgie(Shelby Valley) and Johns Creek(Pike Central) have shots at being very good.

Mason County Tourny is the same weekend. I know a few teams going down there to get away from playing local teams.

The 7th grade team at Mercer County should be one of the best 7th grade teams in the state.

Who are some of the better players on that team? Will they be playing at the KBA in December?

You must be thinking about a different school because this is not even close to the number of kids that tried out for RA's 6th grade team.

Rumor is that Ockerman's 8th grade team will be playing Lexington Catholic in a tournament. Not sure of all the details yet. This should be an interesting game if that is the case.

I don't know about December but I suspect they will play in the 7th Grade State Tourney.

Will Hager, Drew Davis, Connor Souder, Nathan Parker, Blake Hendren, and they'll probably add 6th graders Jon Dunning, Tanner Robins and Garrett Dean onto that team as well. The bolded kids played AAU ball as the Mercer County Cyclones from 3-5th grade.

Ockerman 8th grade boys will be tough to beat. Gray 7th graders look good, too. Thad Moss is a boy giant for the Gators. The girls from Twenhofel won the 6th and 7th grade NKMSAA championships last year, looking to repeat as 7th and 8th graders. Wonder if those girls are involved in AAU or does Twenhofel have a really good program?

6th grade try-outs are widely attended by new middle schoolers, but the numbers are MUCH smaller for 7th and 8th. 30 to 40 for boys? Less than 20 for girls? Depends on the size of the school. Some girls teams don't get enough trying out to field a team - have to borrow from lower grades. Kind of sad.

My preseason picks for the NKMSBL are:

Boys 8th - Ockerman (They will go undefeated! Their only test will be Holmes.) As I've stated before, Stanley is the man in the 8th grade division. Holmes has the only chance at a win in this division over Ockerman.
Boys 7th - Gray (Highlands or Campbell could pull the upset though). Moss can be dominant. Highlands or Campbell have talented squads that could pull upsets, however, I question the coaching ability at Campbell to beat really good teams.
Boys 6th - Highlands - A lot of height and skill will be on this team. They will be bigger than most school's 7th grade squad.

All should make for an interesting year of hoops!

Anyone else like to give their picks???

I know that Campbell County beat them as 6th graders last year in the Camel Classic. Did they add some players or just grow a lot??

Who is the height/skills on the 6th grade HMS team that you speak of? I know of no one with any real size unless someone has moved into the area recently.

You make no mention of Turkeyfoot or Blessed Sacrament in the 7th grade division and yet they were the two teams that advanced to the finals last year.

Highlands 8th will be a pretty good team again this year if Hoge plays 8th grade and the addition of Laine Harrett from Turkeyfoot will be an improvement to the squad. There is some depth on this team, but not a lot of height.

Tryouts are this week for the 6th and 7th grade teams and next week for the 8th grade teams.
