Beliefs are dangerous. Beliefs allow the mind to stop functioning. A non-functioning mind is clinically dead. Believe in nothing.

This year we only did tomatoes and peppers. The deer have just about wiped it out. One of our favorites is fried bannana peppers.

Tomatoes, corn, radishes (white radishes as well) along with green beans are my favorites. I like most all veggies fresh from the garden.

    (3) Wilted lettuce - fresh lettuce just cut and washed, chopped up w/ some fresh onion, then add a little hot bacon grease.
    (4) Fresh corn on the cob. I love speckled white and yellow sweet corn.
    (5) Zuchini bread or deep fried zuchini are both great.

We generally can about 50 quarts of green beans a year, freeze as much corn as we can, can countless quart jars of tomatoe juice, and can about 150 jelly jars of salsa we make ourselves w/ tomatoes, peppers, and onions we grow in our garden.
We also make kraut, some regular, some w/ hot peppers for that little extra burn in the can. And we make salt and bread and butter pickles. I should have bought stock in the Kerr Company that manufactures Mason Jars.
The wilted lettuce is my favorite early Spring food. Fixed as you stated , served with fried potatoes and momma's made from scratch buttermilk cornbread and fried squirrel with gravy.
We also enjoy tomatoes, corn, cabbage, green beans, green onions, and cucumbers.
My wife cans beans, corn, kraut, pickles,& tomatoes that we enjoy through the Winter months.

Tomatoes with a little salt. I'm up to about 3 or 4 a day right now. They give me blisters in my mouth, and my skin breaks out....but it's so worth it. Something to do with the acid according to the doc. Oh well! I'll just continue to torture myself for a few more weeks until they're all gone.

Put a little garlic salt on them and then chill them for 20 minutes in the fridge...It dosn't get much better than that.

I agree, I do not eat store bought tomatoes.

In Lewisburg, just outside of Maysville, there's a produce auction on Tuesday and Friday nights. Lately, prices have been along the lines of:

Corn (usually Ambrosia, Silver Queen, etc.) - $2.50 to $3.50 per dozen
Tomatoes - $4.00 to $5.00 per 10-pound box; $3.00 or so for 20 pounds or more of canners
    Watermelon - $4.00 each
    Zuchinni - $2.00 to $3.00 per peck
Bell Peppers - $4.00 for a box of about a dozen big ones
Canteloupes - $1.50 to $2.50 each (several varieties)
Cabbage - 50 cents to $1.50 per head
    Green Beans - $7.00 for 10-15 pounds
    Grapes - $2.50 per quart

I usually try to make at least once a week. Now that FB season has started, they'll have to get along on the Friday sales without me.

Best bargains of the year - 30 pounds of white potatoes for $4.00; half bushel of peaches for $4.00.

I love and do all of this too. I have a new healthier version of the wilted lettuce. Instead of bacon grease heat up some chicken broth....healither and taste good too.

Just checked my fall garden and it is really looking good. Cucumbers, Zuchinni, Yellow squash, radishes, spinach, leaf lettuce , bib lettuce and mustard greens.Still getting 20-30 tomatoes a day and several peppers.
