It's an awesome area. Relaxed and not a typical tourist destination as far as tshirt shops etc. Great food and shopping as well. At the moment though, I imagine that 5th Avenue is under water as well as most of Olde Naples. We used to bring a boat with us and travel to Marco Island by boat as that was quicker and easier than getting there by car. I hate to even think of what Marco looks like at the moment. Naples will be fine in the long run, so your December trip should be a great one.

3.7 million without power in Florida already. 80% of Dade County without power already.

Now a CAT 2 still 100+ MPH winds.

Saw a report that said Naplez surge is between 5 & 6 feet. Expected to top out around 7 feet. That's not bad at all.

Naples should be okay if they only get 7 feet of surge. 10 foot plus would be an issue.

The heavy part of Irma is past us and the storm is now a category 1 with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph.

It's still gusty, but only 30 or 40 mph gusts. I won't know about any damage until daybreak, but I know the front and back porches are wet, but not damaged.

I am really tired all of the sudden. Going to bed.

Glad you are safe hoping the damage is minimal. Get some rest.

    BGP factoid of the day.

Naples, Florida was planned/founded by a publisher from Maysville by the name of William Haldeman. He also started the Louisville Courier-Journal and was the owner of a major league baseball team (Louisville Grays).

Glad to have seen the storm weaken as it did minimizing severe damage from the CAT 4 or 5 destruction folks saw in the Caribbean.

Although the storm did end up following my family to Orlando I'm happy to report 7 people, 15 dogs, 2 cats, chickens, 1 turkey, and a pig escaped harm and enjoyed quality family time together!

It's still raining and we are getting March like wind gusts. There are tree limbs, some rather large, down in the yard around the house. A section of fence between my neighbor and my self is down. Other than that, no damage that I can find.

Had Irma stayed on the path projected on Saturday, only God knows what would have happened. It would have been a cat 4 hurricane 10 miles off of the coast.

As with Charlie in 2004, Tampa Bay got extremely lucky. Orlando looks to have gotten it worse than us.

I have to head out to work here in a few minutes to undo the preparation measures I undertook Saturday so we can re-open tomorrow.

Naples and Marco Island got the worst of it.

Walter Haldeman, but I guess you used to call him William back in your school days.

Saw this earlier today regarding Tampa Bay...
