Man shoots at armadillo, bullet hits mother-in-law

Authorities say a woman was accidentally shot by her son-in-law while he was trying to shoot an armadillo.

The incident had a lot of people scratching their heads- even law enforcement.

"Just the circumstances, just all the way around, the whole situation was unusual," said Investigator Bill Smith with the Lee county Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened Sunday night on Gosa Road.

Lee County Sheriff's deputies said 54-year-old Larry McElroy was outside when he fired his 9 mm pistol at the armadillo. The bullet killed the animal, but also ricocheted off of it, hit a fence, went through the back door of his mother-in-law's mobile home, through a recliner she was sitting in, and into her back.

I call bullcrap. Ballistically speaking, virtually impossible for that cartridge to do that.

That sounds like one of the weapons off of Eraser or something. There's no chance a 9mm bullet is doing that, right?

I just find the stories and post them here. Maybe we can have Warren Commission look into it.

I love your stories. This one is a crock of manure from this guy.

I loaded 9mm for a while, and know the bullet and it's performance rather well. Those bullets tumble, expand, terrible coefficient and muzzle velocity to do the trick this guy claims.

I've shot enough guns in my lifetime to know that this story has some holes (no pun intended).

Ah yes, the tired old "I shot at an armadillo and hit my mother in law" excuse. Please, get a new excuse.

Surely this guy doesn't really expect people to believe that...

Would a 9mm even be able to go through a door and recliner?

I want the ESPN Sports Science guy to re-enact this shot for us.

Sure, but not after changing directions via armadillo, earth, fence. I shot an armadillo once with a 12 guage in TX turkey hunting. Um, no 9mm is ricocheting off the armadillo. Or the GA version of an armadillo is one tough bastard.

I never thought an armadillo would finally put to rest all the questions regarding JFK's assassination and the "magic bullet".

Are we sure the armadillo and them mother in law are not one in the same?
