BGP QOTD: What phrase or widely used term do you hate the most?

Page 6 of I think for me it's basically all corporate jargon. "Synergy" is probably the one that makes me roll my eyes the most at current. 0 0 0  ... 84 comments | 1216 Views | Go to page 1 →

"To tell you the truth." or "To be honest with you."

What? You've been lying to me all this time?

"To be honest with you, because normally I lie." I have been using this phrase and it's fun to watch people do a double take."

If that wasn't bad enough, all these years later it has stuck, and is still very much overused and misused. its meaning was and still is watered down to the point that it barely means anything at all other than just an exaggerated connector response word within a conversation instead of "Uh huh", or "Yeah", or whatever people might say when they're listening to someone speak.

To people that I know I don't use the word at all. Sometimes if a stranger is chatting with me in public and I really have nothing to say, I'll inject it to pretentiously make them feel like I'm listening to them, but even when I do it makes me cringe.
Agree. Also, some time ago, the word "amazing" became way overused in the movie industry by actors. At the Oscar acceptance speech, referring to the other nominees, "Her work is amazing." "He is an amazing director." "He writes amazing scripts." Etc etc

Similarly, I have always understood the phrase, "I don't care to", to mean that you DO NOT want to do something, go somewhere, eat something, etc. My daughter has been at UK the last 4 years. From her roommates that are from all over Kentucky, she now uses the phrase, "I don't care to", to mean that IT DOES NOT MATTER to her either way--l don't care what we do, I don't care where we go, etc.

I have a boss that uses "Blunt" or Bluntly" in about every other sentence.

Yep...you're right, and it tends to come across as fake too.
