1A Notebook Championship Edition - King of the Hills

By Voice of Reason - Mountain ball heads to Kroger Field in the 1A championship game. Who is going to come out on top as the King of the Hills? There have been no surprises in 1A. For the most part, the bracket has held true to expectations. That has led us to a title game rematch as predicted in the 1A playoff preview. Pikeville had perhaps its closest call to a loss this season in the first meeting with Paintsville. Can the Tigers get the upset in the rematch? Or over the weeks since that game have the Panthers moved up the ladder of improvement out of the reach of the Tigers? First let’s take a look at... Read More →

Year 28 is done: What is next and trying to do better

By ChiefSmoke - 11/10/2019 .... was the date on this blogpost. 69396 Our season ended this past Friday night in a loss to a very good CAL team. It was the first round of the playoffs. We defeated CAL in the regular season but were unable to do so in November. This finishes year 28 as a head coach... 4 at Paris HS, 19 at Mason County HS and now 5 at Mercer County HS. I am very proud of the 2019 Titans. We played some very good football this season and improved substantially from where we have been the past 4 years. Our final record was 8-3. Our 3 losses were to Boyle County (4A #1), DeSales (3A... Read More →

Class 4A Notebook (12/3) - There Was No Other Way

By DragonFire - Much like Thanos this was inevitable. When the season began, Boyle County and Johnson Central were pegged as 1 & 2, and though the chairs behind them were filled by different teams from time to time as the season went on, those two never budged and remained on a collision course. Last Friday did nothing to change that. We were, however, treated to a rare event not seen this season Boyle County received a little push. The #1 Rebels hosted #9 Central in a game many thought wed see in the 3A finals last year, but Corbin crashed that party. Boyle County entered the game having not... Read More →

6A Notebook (12/2): Championship Preview

By Tigerpride94 - 6A Notebook (12/2): Championship Preview Male (14-0) vs. Trinity (12-2) When the season started back in August, the top two teams were Trinity and Male. Fast forward to December and the 6A Championship and it’s still Male and Trinity. These two teams are no strangers to Championship games as Trinity will be going for their 26th KHSAA championship and Male is going for their 9th KHSAA championship. Male will also be trying for back to back championships for first time since they did it in 1963-64. These Coaches are no stranger to the championship as Trinity Coach Bob Beatty will be... By SportsLife - 1. John Hardin (35-1): Despite losing two starters to graduation, reigning champion John Hardin is favored to repeat in the 5th Region. Senior guard/forward Alex Matthews (18 ppg, 11 rpg) is the top player back for the Bulldogs. Matthews averaged a double-double for John Hardin during the 2018-19 boys' high school basketball season. Along with Matthews, senior guard Trevon Harris (6-4) and senior center Preston Murrell (6-9) are back for the Bulldogs. 2. Marion County (22-9): With a senior-heavy lineup, Marion County is a 5th Region title contender. First-year head coach Maze Stallworth is... Read More →

Class 2A Notebook 12/2- From the First Storyline to the Last

By ATLCat - In the very first Notebook of the 2019 season, which was also the Pre-Season preview, the very first words mentioned about the 2019 Class 2A Season was as follows: QB1 is Storyline Number One Class 2A has not exactly lacked for solid QB play over in recent years, but it has never been as deep and rich in talent as what we will see in 2019. In fact, you can argue there might not be another Class in all of the Commonwealth with the wealth of riches that will be on display at the signal caller position from Mayfield to Jackson. As the 2019 State Finals fall upon us, no words have proven... Read More →

3A Notebook: I Will Lift up My Eyes to the Hills

By gchs_uk9 - Belfry, Bell County to Square Off for 3A Championship Five seasons ago, I began writing the 3A Notebook. The style and tone were borrowed liberally from a number of sports writers I'd read since I was a kid. My goal was to highlight football in the commonwealth and especially the kids and teams from Class 3A. This will certainly be the last 3A Notebook of the 2019 season and it will likely be my last 3A Notebook ever as I hand over the reins to someone else to drive the ship for this class. And while things will change in this column space going forward, the one thing that hasn't... Read More →

By 15th Region - 15th Region Overview (Golden Eagles - Kings of the 15th): Johnson Central has dominated the 15th region for nearly a decade and look to repeat this year with an embarrassment of talent. Last season the Golden Eagles advanced to a 15th Region record eighth straight regional title game (5-3 in that span) and return what is expected to be a team capable of running the table in the mountains for years to come. Pikeville will challenge claim to the throne as they have advanced to the regional title game three consecutive years (2-1 in that span) with a stable of young, talented, players that... By zebraman - One of the biggest joys of basketball is that no matter how hard we try, it is very difficult to get an understanding of who is good and who isn’t until several games are under their belt. Teams that we look at before the season, or after 1 or 2 wins, and think they are unstoppable can quickly show us that they are really not that good as they get punched in the mouth by a team that shocks everyone, yes, we are looking at you, Evansville. Even as the end of the season it can be tough. The 16th last season had a clear cut favorite to cut down the nets at Morehead State. However, Ashland got... Read More →

6A Notebook (11/26): Semifinals

By Tigerpride94 - 6A Notebook 11/26: Semifinals We have reached the final four and the top 2 preseason ranked teams in Male and Trinity, as no surprise, are two of the four teams. Tates Creek and North Hardin show up as new kids on the block. Both Tates Creek have had some success at the regional level but neither have won a championship. Tates Creek last appeared in a championship game in 1998, while North Hardin has never appeared in a championship game. Male is looking to win back to back championships, and Trinity would like to return to glory having last won a championship in 2017. Tates Creek... Read More →
